The Women’s Prize for Fiction shortlist (2020) has been announced…

… but really, who gives a flying f***? It’s a prize for women who (by definition) can’t compete with men – women’s chess, anyone? – and the prize-winning books will be predictably poor in comparison with the best books written by men. I have no interest in pandering to women’s narcissism by pretending otherwise.

If you child needs brain surgery, who would you choose? The best surgeon available, or the best female surgeon available?

An interview of Tom Caulfield, J4MB Technical Director

Tom Caulfield, our Technical Director, is a remarkable man. He video recorded the presentations videos at the last four ICMIs as well as the three Messages 4 Men conferences, and edited all the footage other than from ICMI19. Our blog piece on him is here, it includes a link to the Quentin Tarantino Award for Directing Excellence, which I presented him with during the closing ceremony at last year’s Chicago conference.

Tom is surely one of the hardest-working men in the MRM, despite some medical problems. He’s a joy to work with, conscientious, creative and hilarious. We look forward to publishing a video he’s been working on, in about two weeks’ time.

I’ve only just learned that Tom was interviewed for The Glass Blind Spot YouTube channel, in January – here (audio, 45:05). I haven’t listened to it yet, but I look forward to listening to it this evening. Enjoy.

2017 Messages 4 Men mini-conference

Since 2017 there have been Messages 4 Men mini-conferences held in London, on or near International Men’s Day. They’ve been organized by Elizabeth Hobson and Natty Raymond. It’s just come to our attention that the presentation videos for the 2017 event are not on a playlist on our YouTube channel. We’ve just corrected that and the playlist is here.

Glass Blind Spot: Gendered Violence Through The Prism of a Pandemic

Outstanding (video, 1:08:19). I struggle to think of a vlogger whose videos of over an hour’s duration would make me drop everything else to watch them – they could be counted on the fingers of one hand after a chainsaw accident – but Glass Blind Spot would be one of them. Our appreciation for the mention of William Collins’s The Empathy Gap and one of my appearances on London Live TV, in 2015, I think (at 35:52).

The J4MB Comedy Corner

In these challenging times we all need something to lift our spirits, not only spirits (a double Lagavulin, thank you).

A resource we make available to followers of this blog at no cost – really, we should charge for it – is the J4MB Comedy Corner, now up to 52 very special videos. If you don’t find them all very funny, please have a doctor check your pulse.

I’m sometimes asked what I consider to be the best comedy video ever published by an MRA. It’s a hard choice, but if presssed, I’d have to go with Hot Crazy Matrix: Man’s Guide To Women (7:05). A number of people have posted it on YouTube but this particular version has had 1.4 million hits since 2014. My guess is it must have had well over 10 million views. Enjoy. Then, if you’re not already a donor, please go to the section below and start supporting us financially. We’re the only political party in the English-speaking world campaigning for the human rights of men and boys, and we draw no personal income from our work. Now, isn’t that worth £5.00 per month to support?

Monty Python – Australian table wines

Elizabeth and I are working on an exciting project with an American and an Australian, as well as Tom Caulfield, our Technical Director, and hope to make an announcement in about two weeks’ time. The Australian is a Monty Python fan but hadn’t heard of their sketch on Australian table wines. Enjoy (audio, 1:39).

The Australian revealed to me Elizabeth’s nickname in Oz:

Hottie Hobson

Different countries’ responses to COVID-19

Our thanks to Mike P for the following:

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent virus threat and have therefore raised their threat level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, level may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. The virus has been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s Get the Bastard.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France’s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its alert level from “No worries” to “She’ll be alright, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far, no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

The Russians have said “It’s not us.”
