A court’s heard a pregnant woman was arrested after she aggressively abused police officers and kicked one of them in a drunken rage.

Thirty-eight-year-old Stacey Ann Robina Ashton, of Hillside Avenue, appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

She pleaded guilty to provoking behaviour and assaulting a police officer in relation to the same incident, which took place on 16 January at a block of flats on Woodbourne Square in Douglas.

Police were in the building talking to a resident when Ashton arrived and began shouting and swearing before trying to attack the man officers were speaking to.

Ashton, who’s due to have a baby this month, had slurred speech, glazed eyes and was unsteady on her feet as she launched into a foul-mouthed tirade that ended with her arrest.

She had to be carried downstairs to a waiting police van and tried to push an officer, before kicking him as she was being booked into the custody suite at police headquarters.

Magistrates handed her a 16-week jail term suspended for a year for each offence, to run concurrently, telling her it was a serious offence given her criminal record. [J4MB emphasis. Nothing quite emphasises “serious offence” like a suspended sentence.]

They also ordered unemployed Ashton to pay £50 costs and £100 compensation and banned her from entering licensed premises and buying alcohol for 12 months.
