Can free speech end the Sex War? Event in Oxford, Tuesday, 5 March

A repeat of a recent post by Elizabeth Hobson. Hopefully her right to free speech won’t be thwarted, given the recent events in Winchester. I look forward to attending the discussion in just two days’ time.

I (Elizabeth Hobson) will be in conversation with the feminist Elizabeth Halden – about the Sex War and the potential for moving past it.

Free event, organised by Oxford Free-Speech group, at Oxford Town Hall, 7pm to 8:30. Tickets at Eventbrite.

5 March 2015: Mike Buchanan takes supporters on a tour of the J4MB campaign battle vehicle

A few people have responded to yesterday’s piece on a bus in Spain bearing some very distinctive livery (above). A couple of people have expressed regret that J4MB doesn’t (yet) have the income to finance such campaign vehicles. My thanks to Len for suggesting I again make public the video (11:09) of the magnificent campaign vehicle I drove around the Nottingham area in the two months leading up to the 2015 general election, when Ray Barry and I came close to being elected as MPs in Ashfield and Broxtowe respectively.

Not long after we took delivery of the vehicle, we were campaigning near it outside the University of Nottingham when some youths hurled soiled cat litter over it. The incident was caught by BBC cameramen filming a documentary – in which Ray and I appeared – here (video, 5:17).

Jordan Peterson on “Q&A” (Australian Broadcasting Corporation panel discussion)

I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but I’m told Jordan Peterson was on fine form here (video, 1:19:23). If you watch it, please post your comments. Since being published online by ABC five days ago, the piece has been viewed over 800,000 times.

#StopFeminazis Spanish ultraconservative group launches bus campaign against “feminazis”

Our thanks to Douglas for this piece in El País. He writes:

A party in Spain is running a bus around calling for a repeal of sexist laws against men. Where the UK has policies and guidelines that amount to sexist domestic violence law against men, Spain has statute laws.

The bus has emblazoned along the sides the slogan:

It is not gender violence
It is domestic violence
Repeal the gender laws

El País is the most read newspaper in Spanish online and the second most circulated daily newspaper in Spain, after a sports newspaper. The Wikipedia page on the paper – here – says this of the paper’s ideology, and more:

The paper’s ideology has always been defined by a leaning towards europeanism, progressivism and social-liberalism.

The article mentions Vox, a Spanish political party, whose Wikipedia page is here. An extract:

Vox is considered antifeminist, and wants to repeal the gender violence law, which is considered as “discriminant against one of the sexes” and replace it with a “family violence law that will afford the same protection to the elderly, men, women and children who suffer from abuse”. (J4MB: Links in the Wikipedia article to several elements in this paragraph.)

AUSTRALIA: Company director Helen Rosamond arrested over National Australia Bank fraud

Our thanks to Nick for this. The start of the piece:

NSW detectives have charged company director Helen Rosamond with 56 counts of bribery in connection with an alleged multimillion-dollar fraud against National Australia Bank.

Strike Force Napthali detectives arrested Ms Rosamond at her Potts Point home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs following a year-long investigation into allegations she paid millions of dollars of corrupt payments to secure and maintain contracts with NAB.

Ms Rosamond was also charged with obtaining benefit by deception and attempted fraud, in addition to the bribery charges.

Woman’s Hour team are given impartiality training after ‘showing bias against US Supreme Court judge Brett Kavanaugh when he was accused of sex assault’

Our thanks to Mike P for this. An extract:

The BBC stressed: ‘The Woman’s Hour team (along with other production staff) have attended a BBC radio briefing session on impartiality.’

BBC bosses insisted that all of the Woman’s Hour team underwent extra training, including Dame Jenni, 68, who has presented the show since 1987, and editor Miss [J4MB: Not Ms.?] Dalziel. Miss [J4MB: Not Ms.?] Garvey declined to comment.

5 March: Philip Davies MP will call for the abolition of male primogeniture for hereditary titles

A piece published on the BBC website yesterday. The extract of interest to followers of this blog:

The day’s Ten Minute Rule Bill, from the Conservative Philip Davies, is on female succession to hereditary titles – asking for the abolition of male primogeniture for hereditary titles.

Under current law, first born daughters are discriminated against in favour of younger brothers and therefore women are, with a tiny number of exceptions, not entitled to stand in the by-elections for the 92 hereditary seats in the House of Lords.

The bill has cross-party support including from Maria Miller, the Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee.
