BBC Ideas: Where did all the women in tech go?

Our thanks to Douglas for this gem (video, 3:31) from the BBC. It’s presented by Marie Hicks, “Historian of Technology”, and is part of the BBC project, “Amazing women in STEM you need to know about.” The video is so woefully poor, and the understanding of the history of IT so dire, that it’s sole redeeming quality is that it’s hilarious. Who says feminists can’t create comedy?

A million British people a year are tearing up their TV licences. Why? It’s a mystery, all right.

New York Fire Department: Juliette Arroyo, paramedic, promoted to captain despite failing her recertification exam twice

Juliette Arroyo

Our thanks to Tom for this. An extract:

Juliette Arroyo was recently given the promotion on January 23, swearing in alongside 22 other EMS captains, despite effectively being barred from working as a paramedic and facing a state certification expiration date later this month. [J4MB emphasis]

While Arroyo seems to have lost her touch as a paramedic, she seemingly had no problems currying favor with EMS Chief James Booth as his driver and personal aide, a position she has held since 2015.

‘Dr Evil’: Wolverhampton modification artist admits GBH

Brendan McCarthy

BBC caption: Brendan McCarthy ran Dr Evil’s Body Modification Emporium

Our thanks to Groan for this. He writes:

Interesting story in the context of MGM on children. It seems consent isn’t enough for mutilations for adults. It is remarkable that we allow such barbarism on the most vulnerable.

Groan is correct. It’s not a widely-known fact, even in the intactivist community, but case law tells us that adults cannot legally give consent for bodily harm (e.g. MGM) to be performed on minors, nor even on themselves (with a few specific exceptions, MGM not being one of them). In the most celebrated case in this area, one man asked another man – during a S&M party – to nail his foreskin to a wooden table, which he duly did (not how I like to spend my Friday evenings, but each to their own). Both men were charged and convicted.

TERF wars

Sargon of Akaad has released two interesting videos in the last week regarding the ongoing spat between trans-exclusionary radical feminists and intersectional feminists – and particularly the propensity of the latter to invoke state power to protect their ideology.

In ‘Britain’s Political Police’ (17:06), the case of Margaret Nelson (74) is discussed. As a TERF, she has been blogging about her belief in the immutability of sex and this offended some trans activists who contacted the police. Despite being fully aware that Nelson had behaved lawfully, Suffolk police nevertheless contacted her with a view to intimidating her into toning down her rhetoric. Sargon astutely notes how this is antagonistic to the police’s fundamental basis of “policing by consent”.

‘The Intersectional Police Arrest a TERF’ (16:11) documents Stephanie Hayden’s (trans activist) latest target – Kate Scottow, who has been charged with malicious communications for deadnaming Hayden and using masculine pronouns to refer to her. The video also contains commentary on the response of the prison system to trans inmates and an update on the Margaret Nelson story.

Bleak times for free speech.

UNITED STATES: Horrified boyfriend catches his girlfriend stealing his sperm from a used condom after sex – and asks the internet: ‘Is this legal?’

Our thanks to Mike P for this. The start of the piece:

A worried man has turned to the internet for advice after discovering his girlfriend ‘stealing’ his sperm after sex.

The baffled boyfriend from New York revealed on Reddit that he had gone to the bathroom after having sex with his girlfriend, and returned to find her ‘pouring the contents of a used condom inside her vagina’. [J4MB: Was she doing a handstand at the time? And if so, how did she have a hand free to do the pouring? The mind boggles.]

Asking if anyone knew if what she’d done was legal, he added: I’m nervous as f*** honestly.’

And it appears the unfortunate man may not have the law on his side.

Despite being obviously morally wrong, the US legal system considers the passing of sperm during sex ‘a gift’ even if it was not intended.

A series of cases have found that it cannot be classed as theft, including one couple who had a baby after the woman kept semen after they had oral sex then used it to get pregnant.

In 2013 the Daily Mail columnist Liz Jones admitted having tried to become pregnant with the contents of two ex-partners’ used condoms – one was her husband – here.

R.I.P. Albert Finney

In response to the death of Albert Finney, Brendan O’Neill has written an excellent, insightful piece for Spiked!.

O’Neill celebrates Finney’s work and his ground breaking persona – and also notes the demise of the legacy of the egalitarian 1960s:

“Fast forward to 2019 and the world could not be more different. Anger, especially among young working-class males, is no longer culturally celebrated – it is treated, extinguished, referred for anger-management therapy. White working-class men are the bête noire of the liberal elite. Respectable society looks upon modern-day Arthur Seatons – cocky young blokes with ill-advised vices – as the scourge of the nation. Poorer kids are no longer challenged in schools – they’re bombarded with ideological guff about respect and diversity and lowering your own expectations in order to avoid ‘stress’.”
