What have alpha males ever done for business?
Ministers John Glen and Victoria Atkins have called for “greater diversity” in the workplace, adding that companies should “call out” non-inclusive behaviour.
They particularly highlighted the “woefully low” number of women in senior jobs the City, which is both “morally wrong” and affects the sector’s productivity.
The equality game rests on lobbyists ability to convince people that the inequality that they care about is the most intolerable. Glen and Atkins believe that the inequality of outcome seen with different demographics justifies inequalities (in the core liberal values) of treatment and opportunity.
The measure that they’re suggesting – to provide specific support for women is immoral. Their suggestion that companies should encourage less commitment in their workforce (concentrating on flexible working and apparently decoupling bonuses from performance) seems untenable and is certainly unfair.
