I started my business career in 1979, as a graduate trainee with Beecham, and at that time mentoring in the business world was all but unknown. It became more popular over time, invariably with men mentoring women. The unstated objective was to capture knowledge accumulated by men over lengthy periods of time, and hand it on a plate to women, so the careers of the latter could be accelerated at the expense of male colleagues. Mentoring is just one of many manifestations of men having a stronger work ethic than women, the latter wanting senior positions without having to put in the time and effort their male colleagues have to.
I was interested to learn of a consequence of the workplace sexual harassment debacle, men are becoming less inclined to mentor women. About damned time. Let’s see women competing with men as “equals”. Our thanks to Sean for this (video, 9:49).
