Any form non medical tissue removal from any part of any non consenting person is a criminal act and deeply objectionable.
That the focus is on FGM, and not on MGM at all profoundly deepens the offence and is cause enough for indignant and righteous wroth.
As if that were not bad enough, I am disappointed and perplexed that such a babarous and primitive practice should have survived so long into the 21st century.
Truely we’re not as civilised as we mistakenly thought we were.
Interesting. My own view is that the relatively sudden feminist interest in FGM was because it occurs far away. There are no powerful interests in this country to face. By contrast the early interest in “forced marriage” faded once the communities in the UK which have arranged marriages insisted on distinctions being made. So there was and is widespread training on FGM for all public services. Yet little support for the charities supporting young women and men forced to marry. As for Africa the clear contradictions in the American (Gates in particular) support for Circumcision and opposition to FGM must be a source of confusion and resentment.
