Prager University (‘PragerU’) sues YouTube in free-speech case

Our thanks to Larry for this, a PDF of an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal. It starts:

LOS ANGELES—Prager University, a nonprofit that produces short, educational videos from conservative perspectives, is suing YouTube and its parent company, Google, claiming the tech giant is illegally censoring some of its content as part of a wider effort to silence conservative voices.

A lawsuit filed Monday evening in federal court in San Francisco says YouTube’s more than 30 million visitors a day make the site so elemental to free speech in the digital age that it should be treated as a public forum. The suit argues the site must use the “laws governing free speech,” not its own discretion, to make decisions about what to censor.

The nonprofit, known as PragerU, alleges that by limiting access to some of its videos without clear criteria YouTube is infringing on PragerU’s First Amendment rights.

YouTube said it didn’t have immediate comment because it hadn’t yet reviewed the suit. The site is owned by Google, part of Alphabet Inc.

Our thanks to Larry also for emailing the following:

YouTube is censoring many of PragerU’s videos by not allowing viewers in restricted mode to view them, e.g. secondary school students at schools.  YouTube blocks videos that are “hateful, offensive and derogatory.”

An Ear for Men, Paul Elam’s YouTube channel that has had videos removed and censored, might want to join the lawsuit.  https://www.avoiceformen.com/a-voice-for-men/fighting-to-keep-the-message-alive/

  1. Brief, to the point, light on B.S., heavy on fact and with excellent production values, Prager’s five minute videos make a first class primer for those not yet up to speed on Cultural Marxism or who, by virtue of youth, (like me!) do not yet have the life experience to know when they are being lied to.
If you know someone likely to benefit, please take a moment to point them in the right direction.
All our futures depend on it.

  2. anyone remember reading Naomi Klein s book on the intrusion of corporates into private lives and public spaces? ( I think it was no logo). there was a part about the systematic removal of public spaces to allow free thought, speech and opinions etc and that these spaces would be taken over by corporates .

That these new spaces( privately owned) would have to become the public spaces, but that the law would have to be changed to allow free speeches.

Google( youtube) have of course stepped into the public arena by effectively becoming the monopoly on social communication( eg free thought and public discourse).

With their heavy handed attempt at censorship and political bias, I think they are only pushing themselves sooner towards regulation and anti trust action.
