ICMI17 – Mark Latham, ‘The Myth of White Male Privilege’

Enjoy (video, 42:32).

Possibly the most highly-anticipated talk at ICMI17 was that of Mark Latham, which kicked off the final day. Mark Latham is a former Australian politician who was the leader of the Australian Labor Party and Leader of the Opposition from December 2003 to January 2005. He led the party at the 2004 federal election. For some time he hosted Outsiders, an Australian television news and commentary programme broadcast weekly on Sky News Australia, and now hosts Mark Latham’s Outsiders. We had a very amicable conversation.

  1. Excellent talk with food for thought. I was interested in the comment about Corbyn . It struck me that although he has attempted the “feminist” card in fact he’s been dogged by his party’s feminists facing constant snipes and a couple of concerted group complaints of sexism. It struck me, as Latham’s analysis, that the very fact Corbyn is old style Marxist class war inevitably makes him suspect. For if the agenda is indeed more top jobs, board positions and wealth for women, someone focussed on doing away with these is bad news for lots of feminists, I suspect quite a few feminists in his own party fear this. After all in communist countries men and women were equally oppressed poor and depressed, in China of course there was even the same clothes and no make up! Latham’s perspective really makes one think.
