I apologise for clogging up your comments section. But yet again the paper follows the drift of thinking the case is about “consent” , as you say , as if one can consent to GBH on behalf of someone! One wouldn’t think that consent would come into if if the child had been punched or kicked. I don’t know if its a good or bad thing that the real significance of the charges is missed. In Germany an attempt to outlaw infant circumcision was scuppered by the clamour of “anti Semitism” and “racism”, I do not doubt these will be trotted out here.

An interesting aspect of this, of which I was initially unaware, is that ‘The Police’ were disinclined to do anything until the mother approached an anti-mutilation organisation. I think there could be several ideological undercurrents to this causing conflicts in the official mind. One thing seems clear to me however, which is that they are not acting on behalf of the victim.

Circumcision is genital mutilation and is child abuse. But it seems clear that if the mother had agreed to the procedure, the police would have turned a blind eye, as indeed they did initially. It’s equally clear that if it had been a young girl suffering female genital mutilation, the authorities would have been in there like a shot.

Thing is, they’ve admitted it’s GBH now. There’s no going back for them.

I will be honest about what I think of this situation.. its stinks..
the investigation only happened on the basis of the mothers rights( sounds familiar?)
The police initially treated it as non criminal case( if it had been a girl then we know the outcome would have been different).
we all know that ideology of women rights and religion have come into this and yet the decision makers don’t have the courage or the principles to say no..
I hope that this will bear pressure on authorities to act and push for punishment on ANY genital mutilation( circumcision for medical necessity would of course be exempt)
