There have been persistent rumours that Theresa May is keen to increase the number of female Tory MPs, an assault on meritocracy which would have been unthinkable during Margaret Thatcher’s term as prime minister.
The proportion of Tory MPs who are women already considerably exceeds the proportion of prospective parliamentary candidates (PPCs) who are women. Ms May’s demand for more Tory female MPs is being implemented by Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ), where I worked as a consultant over 2006-8.
A year or two ago Caroline Spelman MP, Conservative party chairman in 2007, admitted during a BBC Radio 4 interview that during her term as chairman, men had outnumbered women as PPC applicants by a ratio of 10:1 – then cynically proceeded to tell her interviewer that the party ‘needed’ more female MPs.
I resigned my party membership in 2009 when David Cameron announced his intention to introduce all-women PPC shortlists for the approaching general election, and set to work on my first feminism-related book, David and Goliatha. Several members in Wales said they believed the interventions were part of an effort to ensure the Tories secure their first-ever female MP in Wales. [Clearly a more important objective than appointing the best candidates.]
Mrs Thatcher would have been appalled by such a feminist social engineering exercise.

To be honest I’m rather sanguine about this as the forcing will I suspect rile ordinary members of the Party, Perhaps sufficiently to do something about it in future. Also I have to observe that in general the resultant crop of MPs, Opposition “shadow” ministers and indeed Ministers have been pretty dismal generally so perhaps this phase will pass. back at the end of the 70s there was a phase of enthusiastic “Rosie the riveter” campaigns to get Girls into “trades” I note that that didn’t last nor is there any interest in pushing it anymore. Hopefully the enthusiasm for female politicians will fade as the reality is constantly shown to be pretty pedestrian rather than a “whole new politics”.

Why are they doing this? Do they not understand that the overwhelming majority of the British public do not want this? They want real people from the local area, not quotas.

Imposing women PPCs on a safe seat is hardly the way to promote the notion that women can do anything men can do. Feminists are too dim to see that.

No, they’re not too dim, they just want power, and care not a jot how they get it. That, allied with shamelessness, explains this.

They are also imposing ethnic minority candidates on white constituencies in what appears to be part of the white ethnic cleansing/ mass third world immigration campaign going on at a European level. When a Conservative MP in a safe seat retires they get a black MP better if its a black woman. So Saffron Walden gets a Nigerian woman.
