    • Archer, it is almost exactly as you said. We can not pretend we have a democracy when women are treated in such a blatantly privileged manner. And the old Victorian manners along with feminist philosophies do not sit well with Democratic principals either. Time for a change I would think.

  1. It’s a BBC article, so I’m willing to believe it’s misrepresenting Davies’ argument, but taken at face value it’s not quite convincing. How do you identify ‘offenders who subsequently go on to commit more serious offences’? He’s demanding judges punish people speculatively for crimes they might commit in future, which will merely compound the problem of prejudice in the criminal justice system.

    Davies is usually no stranger to taking a bull by the horns, but he needs to say explicitly that this is a gender issue. Saying we need harsher sentencing as if that were true across the board is meaninglessly populist. As you pointed out, more lenient sentencing of men would have its merits:
