John Barry / Gender Equity Network: The impact of gender equality schemes on the STEM workforce

Three weeks ago John Barry, a psychologist, gave the first lecture of the Gender Equity Network. Extracts totalling 13 minutes are here. The introduction is made by Belinda Brown, a social anthropologist whose work we’ve covered before, some of it on the website of The Conservative Woman.

  1. Not “new” but an interesting way to frame it. That the obsession on quotas in very specific careers gets in the way of women’s choices by channelling them into careers they don’t want and quickly leave as a result. There was last week a speech from a minor Tory minister on “Women into Railways”. Unintentionally funny it portentously points out that in 1914 there was much the same proportion of women working in the industry as now. I really do look forward to public money being spent on getting more women into Trains and Railways, having shown general disinterest for at least a century its going have to be big.
