Deepika Bhardwaj is an Indian documentary filmmaker who is working on a film about the appalling legal position of married men in India, which is leading many of them to suicide. Her article has just been published on AVfM along with two short but moving trailers for her forthcoming film, Martyrs of Marriage – here. She’s a brave and honourable woman, and we wish her every success.

The History of “498a” includes not a little pressure from groups funded by “aid”. In this way perverse results have happened from laws influenced by and ideology nurtured in very different societies. With over a billion people and variety of cultural histories to match Europe it is not surprising to see such injustices. Not only does British Government aid come with “gender equality ” strings but a number of our NGO s also explicitly focus on women and/or gender equality in their aid giving. Of course the result is often that they cut across and undermine the social fabric of the recipient society. India is increasingly less beholden to foreign finders. But many countries are much more dependent and vulnerable to this form of intervention . Effectively being subject to ideologically driven pressure without thought to the actual circumstances .
