We recently challenged Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, over a truly ludicrous claim he’d made in the course of a speech at the TUC:
Hiring more women in senior roles makes us much, more effective.
We wrote an article for AVfM which included a link to the letter in which we’d publicly challenged Carney – here.
Our challenge was passed onto Roger Beaton, of the bank’s ‘Public Information and Enquiries Group’, for a response. Apparently the best this hapless official could manage was this embarrassing response, so we’re about to reply with this.

Diversity? Range of skills?
How about best person for the job?

Agreed. His response is pure BS and presumably given to him to spout. I should have asked him what ‘range of skills’ women bring that men don’t – maybe one for Round 3. He’s really been put in an impossible position, seeking to justify the unjustifiable. Hopefully he’ll display some integrity in his next letter, but I won’t hold my breath.

There are of course many diversity strands. It may be interesting to get them to respond to a FOI on what they are doing about : Disability, Race, Religious Belief , sexual orientation, Learning Disability , Autism. If their objective is indeed to reflect the population of the Uk or England there is much more to do than have targets for women. Of course the truth is that it is only Sex( “Gender” being inaccurate in this context as all that is at issue is the sex of the worker) and possibly race that any actual “positive action” will be actually in place.

Indeed. It’s only women who ever gain traction with ‘diversity’. I can’t recall the BoE ever talking about other types of diversity.
