University Challenge

Our thanks to Steve for sending two screenshots from last night’s University Challenge. The first was taken five minutes before the end:

Then the man on the Brasenose College (Oxford) team – which included three women – answered questions to raise the team’s score from 5 to 35 at the end:

Given the BBC’s stated intention to stop having all-male teams on panel games, which sometimes leads to embarrassing ‘contributions’ from token female panelists. the lesson the BBC will take from last night’s programme is obvious. There must be an end to all-male teams on University Challenge. Perhaps, for good measure, gender-balanced teams in future. After all, the government is leading the way with its plans to force FTSE350 companies to have gender-balanced boards in future. What could possibly go wrong?

  1. Seeing as women now completely dominate higher education admissions, one has to wonder why we still have 3 colleges at Cambridge all of which bar male students (with one even going as far as banning male fellows too!).
