Gender pay gap won’t close for another 30 years, warns trade unions group

Our thanks to Jeff for this on the BBC. Not a single word about the impacts of freely-made choices by men and women fully accounting for the ‘gender pay gap’. Jeff writes:

  1. The big clue is the references to mothers and childcare. Already the taxpayers and employers pay vast amounts to fund time off and free childcare. Also of course just added to the child benefits bill. Wanting more of the same will ensure the gap continues, because it effectively gives choices not to work or work as hard. The evidence is clear. The Scandinavians have large and persistent gender pay gaps as women have the choice to work less, have time off and work in public services. Meanwhile the countries with the lowest gender pay gap in Europe are those with little of these benefits or subsidies! The gap being low because no one can afford all the subsidies and “rights” that mean less work. In the 1990s the gender pay gap in Northern Ireland was in women’s favour . A number of occasions because massive subsidies maintained the public sector while industry collapsed. A situation requiring huge subsidies from the rest of the UK until the economy picked up. Even now the gaps are smallest in the regions that are poorest. Where public services are the big employers not productive industry. A gender pay gap being bigger appears a positive both for the prosperity of the society and for women wanting flexible working! The real “solution” would be to make every worker work full time.
