  1. Coming from a place with the second largest Jewish community in Britain I couldn’t help a wry smile as I watched local BBC coverage. Of course centred on the recent attack here and the attack in Australia shortly after. It followed the usual pattern of skirting round the the direction from which anti semitic attacks come. It really is annoying as these attacks are talked about as if an inexplicable change has occurred here from the generally “live and let live” attitudes that were the norm until not so long ago. Yet the rise in attacks is linked, unsurprisingly, with the more recent arrivals from the middle east and “…..stans”. My son and a friend of mine have had jobs as security for local Synagogues (my friend’s sister actually manages the buildings). While there was certainly prejudice in the past the need for pretty full on security at places of worship and schools is fairly recent and reflects this shift to attacks rather than name calling. Yet it is reported as if the general population has suddenly become antisemitic.
