An excellent piece in a blog published by The Times of Israel, well worth reading in full. The short bio on the site of the writer, Rebecca Wald:
“Rebecca Wald, J.D. is the executive director of Bruchim, a nonprofit that supports non-circumcising Jewish families as they navigate the often complex terrain of Jewish institutional acceptance and the family dynamics surrounding their unusual choice. She is also the co-author of Celebrating Brit Shalom, a guide to alternative Jewish covenant ceremonies for families welcoming a new child. Rebecca graduated with honors in English from The George Washington University, and received her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, where she served on the editorial board of the Brooklyn Law Review.”
I posted these comments:
“Rebecca, thank you for this very balanced piece, to which I’ll link now. The AAP’s 2012 policy statement was an utter scandal, explored in the film “American Circumcision”. To the best of my knowledge no other medical body in the world came to the same conclusion, and all that have reached a conclusion have been firmly against the circumcision of children other than on medical grounds.
We have campaigned against circumcision on non-medical grounds since 2013. In the UK carry out such circumcision is implicitly illegal under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, being at least ABH and almost certainly GBH. I tried to take out a private prosecution of a Sikh doctor but wasn’t given leave to do so.
