Women face £65,000 ‘motherhood penalty’ for having a child

A piece (£) written by a woman (what are the chances?) in yesterday’s Telegraph. The £65,000 figure relates to the first five years after a child is born. Of course it’s all about the mother’s income, no mention of the sacrifices made by their partners, or the extra money earned by them to support their sprog(s), or the happiness and contentment of fathers, mothers and children.

The article also references recent official data which shows Britain’s fertility is at a record low, with the average woman in England and Wales having just 1.41 children in her lifetime. The figure includes the fertility rate for foreign-born mothers which has jumped in the past two years to 2.03 children per woman. This puts it close to the so-called replacement rate of at least 2.1 children per mother, which the UK needs to sustain its population. [J4MB emphasis: but only in relation to foreign-born mothers.]
