Interesting (video, 38:24). Susie Bennett is a PhD student at the Suicidal Behaviour Research Laboratory in the University of Glasgow (22 of the 28 members of the Laboratory are women). I’ve posted the following comments, which take up the remainder of this blog piece:

“Thanks for this fascinating interview which I’ll link to on our website.

Susie comes across as a very intelligent and compassionate woman, but there’s a whole area she doesn’t cover in this interview. To my mind, the key reason that far more men than women commit suicide in the UK – and globally – is not so much their responses to life’s challenges, but that they’re far more likely to face life challenges which lead to the wish to end life.

Two obvious examples:

– homelessness, over 90% of the street homeless are men

– denial of access to children after family breakdowns (over 90% of parents denied access are fathers).

Now, as with so many other suicide-inducing challenges, these are male disadvantages (and causes of suffering) created by female privilege – in the first case through preference for accommodation, in the second through women’s greater power to persuade family courts to deny child access to the other parent. I understand the male suicide rate increases threefold after fathers are exposed to family courts.

Surely the key to reducing the male suicide rate lies in ending (or at least reducing) the incidence of such devastating life challenges as denial of access to children? The empathy gap will always be with us, and a lack of funding for initiatives for men is but one of many consequences of it.

One final thought. Many men find that when life is at the most challenging for them – e.g. they lose their jobs, and are struggling to find another – their (female) partners head for the hills, one consequence of female hypergamy. And lower-status men probably won’t have a female partner in the first place, again because of female hypergamy.

Interesting. No women played a part in this amazing story, how can that even be possible? The start of the Wikipedia piece:

“The Père David’s deer (Elaphurus davidianus), also known as the milu or elaphure, is a species of deer native to the subtropical river valleys of China. It grazes mainly on grass and aquatic plants. It is the only extant member of the genus Elaphurus. Some experts suggest demoting Elaphurus to a subgenus of Cervus. Based on genetic comparisons, Père David’s deer is closely related to Eld’s deer.

Père David’s deer were hunted almost to extinction in their native China by the late 19th century, but a number were taken to zoos in France and Germany and the deer was bred successfully in captivity. In the early 20th century, the British nobleman and politician Herbrand Russell, 11th Duke of Bedford, acquired a few Père David’s deer from the Berlin Zoo and built up a large herd on his estate at Woburn Abbey. In the 1980s, the duke’s great-grandson Robin Russell, 14th Duke of Bedford, donated several dozen deer to the Chinese government for reintroducing the species to the wild. As of 2020, the wild population in China was an estimated 2,825 individuals, with a further 7,380 in various nature reserves in China. All Père David’s deer alive today descend from Herbrand Russell’s original herd.”

BBC culture – an oxymoron?

I’ve recently been watching content from a Chinese state broadcaster, China Global Television Network (CGTN), especially CGTN Documentary. The quality of content of the latter is in English and first-class, a proud celebration of China’s past, present, and planned future, including wildlife documentaries.

It occurred to me to Google search, “Does the BBC promote British culture?” This took me here, do let me know (mike@j4mb.org.uk) if you can find any pieces celebrating British culture. Thank you.

A piece in an online Wrexham news website. Extracts:

“A Wrexham business leader is calling for more women to take on leadership roles in the automotive sector, after being “shocked” by the industry’s lack of diversity.

Laura Hall, managing director of Maverick Diagnostics in Holt, is a member of the Automotive 30% Club [J4MB emphasis: This alone shows Ms. Hall is sexist] – a national campaign group working to increase the number of women in senior positions across the industry…

Ms Hall, whose background is in the oil and gas industry, said she was struck by the gender imbalance in automotive soon after joining the sector.

“Quite early on I had gone to some industry event and the gender imbalance was shocking, there were so few women. The aftermarket industry is particularly bad,” she said. [J4MB: Very odd, given how many women must dream of senior positions in the automotive aftermarket industry…].

“I went to some trade events early on and I was horrified, not only because there were very few women, but there was no real diversity whatsoever – it was all middle-aged white men.” [J4MB emphasis: Ms. Hall reveals herself to be ageist, racist and sexist.]

Given the long-established causal link between increasing gender diversity on boards and corporate financial decline, the proper response to Ms. Hall’s campaign “to increase the number of women in senior positions across the industry” would be to laugh in her face. Sadly, few men (or women) will do that, so we get an endless stream of gormless harpies such as Ms. Hall getting media coverage for their idiotic statements.

I’ve sent the paper an email, asking if it’s their policy to provide a platform to ageist, racist sexists, also sending the email to the only email address I could find on her company’s website, that of the sales department.
