Donald Trump signs off Keir Starmer’s controversial Chagos Islands deal

A very bad decision by The Donald. An extract:

“The plan follows an International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling that the archipelago belongs to Mauritius which critics point out is not binding on the UK.

Mauritius had a long history of colonisation (successively by the Dutch, French and British) before the British granted the island independence in 1968. It was paid millions of pounds at the time to relinquish any potential future claims to the Chagos Islands, the site of the strategically important Diego Garcia US-UK military base since the 1970s.

Starmer is a lawyer before he’s a politician. The decision to take on a 99-year lease on the Chagos Islands (at a cost to the British taxpayer reported to be up to £18 BILLION i.e. £18,000,000,000) is akin to a man owning a house giving it away to someone with no legal right to own it, and then paying thousands of pounds every year to the new owners. Madness on stilts. I hope Nigel Farage and his party bring this issue up relentlessly in the years leading up to the next general election.
