  1. Against the law since 1985 and only three convictions. That says a lot. And its interesting isn’t it that a man, already convicted of conspiracy, gets his sentence made longer. The actual FGM and arranged marriage never took place. However women who have actually assaulted people causing GBH get suspended sentences?

    • There have been few prosecutions for FGM because the criminal injustice system wants to maintain the myth that FGM is carried out by and for the benefit of men, instead of by women at the behest of women.

      • Indeed. Its mainly a sub-Saharan African thing where it is very definitely “women’s business”. In which case it would involve mothers and aunts in both the “conspiring”, taking the girls to their ancestral homes and doing the deed. In my experience there have been two “national” training programmes rolled out to NHS and Social Services Staff each following the two Acts of Parliament. Attending both I know the content made it pretty obvious that it is very much women’s business just as MGM is very much Men’s business in the African and East African Arabic cultures it is prevalent. Iraq was not one of the areas it is as common. The case does seem very odd. As I recall the two other cases where there has been a conviction include a mother and an Aunt. Actually doing something about this would involve a parade of “mums” and female relatives being prosecuted.
