As always Bettina Ardnt makes exellent points. It probably seems unconnected but the recent story here about Metropolitan Police “civilian” staffs highlights one of the slow burn corrosive effects of DEI. Met Police staff go on strike for first time ever as 300 walkout after ‘being told to they would be docked pay for working from home’ | Daily Mail Online A not unfamiliar tale of WFH perks applied due to “lockdown” being fought for as if they are a “right”. The Union leader is of course a woman, unsurprising given the Public Service union represents the largely female administrative workforces within our public services. In other reporting one inevitably gets sob stories from “a single mother” or woman “with health issues”. As the mainly female workforce wants less time at actual work. Meanwhile the leader of the Police Officer’s union comments on the contrast with his members who have to deliver a 24 hr. Service and have no right to strike. However some police officers are “sympathetic” to the WFH workers. And one can see some will also want to have “family friendly” hours and WFH options. And this is the problem once some women win these concessions, then others demand them and get them then of course the workers who have to “cover” for these privileged workers both resent this additional work and begin to demand similar concessions and so on. In my 40 years working in public services I saw this effectively extinguish the public service ethos, because those workers who’d do things for the “people of …….. ” and make an effort began to think of themselves as “mugs” for working hard when more and more of their colleagues do the minimum and “take the piss” with ever more superficial reasons they need not to do the actual work. The Metropolitan police episode just illustrates how thhe actual vital service to the population, in this case an efficient professional police force is and continues to be undermined by a workforce that simply expects to fit their job around their convenience.

Of course it all points to something Dr Catherine Hakim pointed to in her Preference Theory (2000), that while four in seven British men are ‘work-centred’, only one in seven British women is. WFH is a scam, mainly exploited by women working in the already hopelessly unproductive public sector. Today I had a query about Premium Bonds I’ve owned since I was a kid, 60+ years ago. The scheme is run by National Savings and Investments (NS&I), formerly called the Post Office Savings Bank and National Savings, a state-owned savings bank. I sent them the query and received an auto-response to the effect they hoped to respond within 23 days!
