I notice the BBCs past chipper reporting of the odd female in the Ukraine army has faded as they report the shortage of men https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-68255490 as both sides try to replace their losses. Last year a brief mention was made of the “gender divide” as the travel ban on males 18 – 60 gave prospective students some hard choices, well the boys at least. There was, unintentionally, a nice example of the girls’ privileges, as one girl breezily tells it; “It’s not even discussed. Boys don’t blame anyone, they understand it’s the rules and they should be obeyed,” she says. adding “But they try also to leave – they’re [just] 16, 17, 18 years old.” Because of course if they leave before they’re 18th they are stuck outside their homeland unable to make visits back. And now of course Ukraine is indeed extending its “draft” to younger men.

Quite probably in Russia too young women can afford to be almost as cheery, as their male peers face similar choices.
No rush to breakdown these sorts of “gender gaps”. And what keeps men in line? Shame.
“One day, their children will ask what they did during the war, when the men were fighting. When they reply, ‘I was hiding,’ then they’ll plummet in the children’s eyes,” Pavlo says firmly.
Because of course shame won’t be an issue for the literally millions of women who fled, with blessings.
