Women and diamonds

Maybe 18/19 years ago, accompanied by my fiancee – my first marriage had ended with divorce some years previously – I had an appointment with a sales lady at Baker Brothers in Bedford. She asked if we wanted  to look at a selection of diamonds for my fiancee’s engagement ring, to be set in platinum. Of course we agreed, and so it was that she duly presented three cut diamonds (the largest over a carat in weight) on a black felt cushion, under a strong lamp. I can’t recall the ensuing conversation, but it was clear I was there only as the hapless owner of a credit card with a substantial credit limit. In plain English, the sales lady said this to my fiancee:
Which diamond would you like? The small one, medium one, or large one? The sucker next to you will have to pay for it, not you, so fill your boots!
Faced with such a scenario, how many women have ever said, “Ooooooh, I just LOVE the smallest one. Can I have it, please? Can I?” And so it was, inevitably, that my fiancee selected the 1+ carat diamond. I recall the price of the eventual ring with a shudder. Which brings me to synthetic or “lab-grown” diamonds, which are considerably less expensive. They are chemically identical to natural diamonds, consisting of pure carbon (the same element that’s in the graphite of pencils). Pandora, a jeweller, only sells lab-grown diamonds. Their largest is 1.75 carats – here – which retails (in a 14K gold ring) for £2,990. A quick Google search reveals a ring with a 1.75 carat natural diamond retailing at £14,995 – here. Returning to the Pandora website, there are only two reviews, both with one star out of a maximum five stars:
HORRIBLE Was given this by my boyfriend and IT WAS TOO CHEAP immediately broke up with him
Bad, just bad Brought for my gf and she broke up w me, I need a refund
What sort of a plonker TELLS his fiancee the diamond is lab-grown? Better that she finds out after trying to sell it, possibly some years down the line.

FEMALE domestic abuse victims to receive ‘flee funds’ to escape abusive partners

Our thanks to Jeff for this. The start of the piece:
Hundreds of domestic abuse survivors will receive cash payments of £2,500 each to help them flee their tormentors, under a new initiative. The £2m scheme, which launches this month, is described as a “lifeline” for women who can’t flee – or are forced to return to – abusive relationships because they cannot afford essentials. A successful pilot of the scheme last year, saw 600 victims given £250 or £500. A review found 80% of applicants used it to flee to a safe location, as well as buy food, clothing, nappies and security cameras. The new scheme funded by the Home Office and delivered by Women’s Aid charities, will see these “flee funds” rolled out across England and Wales, and offers an additional £2,500 payment to pay for a rental deposit or bills.
Later in the piece:
The safeguarding minister, Laura Farris, told Sky News: “No government has done this before. Of course, we’re going to have to see how it works and it may be that we need to increase funding.”
No shit, Sherlock. £2,000,000 more for Women’s Aid (funding may “need to increase”) and the usual £0.00 (no “need to increase”) for the few charities supporting male victims of domestic abuse.

Female lawyer: “I earn more than £100,000 a year — but I’m pretending to do my job”

Our thanks to Nigel for this. He writes:
In this article a series of women reveal how they are simply not doing their jobs. An amazing list of laziness, lies, timewasting and just plain fraud. Yet somehow the tone is sympathetic! If ever there was something that should ring alarm bells about female dominated workplaces!

EHRC to be investigated by UN group after bullying allegations

Our thanks to Nigel for this interesting piece. The headline (above) in PinkNews is misleading. The UN investigation relates mainly, it would seem, to the EHRC’s position on biological sex. An extract:
In justifying the review, GANHRI also cited the recent report by independent UN expert, Victor Madrigal-Borloz, who said in May that the commission wanted to give the government a “formula through which it would carry out discriminatory distinctions against trans people. Madrigal-Borloz added that he was “particularly alarmed” by recommendations made by the EHRC to change the definition of sex in the 2010 Equality Act to mean ‘biological sex’.

Anna Motz, psychologist: “The Last Taboo: Female Sexual Abuse of Children”

An interesting piece in Psychology Today. Some followers of this website may recall that Michele Elliott was the founder and director of Kidscape, a British charity, and she’s still associated with it. Her book Female Sexual Abuse of Children – The Ultimate Taboo was published in 1993 and of course resulted in considerable hostility and opposition from feminists. The issue of sexual abuse was covered in the longest section of our final manifesto, pp.51-7.
