There have been a number of attempts to ban non medical circumcision for babies and infants. Mainly in Scandinavia and Germany where it is opposed by their medical associations. All have failed because of the claim the ban is racist. The irony is that the very same arguments for FGM, that it is a cultural and religious practice integral to the identities of the communities of origin are simply dismissed. Even the argument that the practice wait till the boy is old enough to make a choice gets short shrift. As a matter of practical politics we will have to wait for a significant proportion of the Jewish and Muslim community to change their minds.

Thanks Groan. MGM is opposed by medical associations around the world, except in the US where we know the relevant position was drafted by a very pro-circumcision doctor (explored in Brandon Marotta’s film ‘American Circumcision’). I see no grounds for believing Jews and Muslims in any numbers will ‘change their minds’.
