An interesting survey, just published. Early on in the related article, however, we see this claim from Beth Mann, Research Executive:
Although it is very hard to put a figure on it, research suggests false rape claims are rare. Separate studies by the Home Office and Ministry of Justice suggest a figure of around 3% of reported rapes may be false.
The figure of 3% is simply ridiculous. In his book The Empathy Gap: Male Disadvantages and the Mechanisms of Their Neglect (2019) – the Kindle edition costs just £4.32 on Amazon – William Collins calculated (using government statistics) that 77% of rape allegations made to the police were false. In an article he wrote (under his real name, Rick Bradford) for the Centre for Male Psychology in March 2022, he estimated that between 30-80% of rape allegations over the years 2014-20 were false. We shall be presenting this evidence to YouGov.

I expect this survey is part of the campaign to get “rape” trials conducted by “special” courts without juries. I’m always interested in these sorts of things because they are always framed as if “the public” are just plain wrong. It seems to never to be considered that just maybe “the public” have a wider experience and may in fact reflect the reality. Certainly it should be no surprise that older people are generally less likely to be on message, simply because life and experience generally teaches one that reality is rarely as simple as one believes in the naivete of youth. I like the way the report picks on the supposed contradictory idea that people may think false reporting is as bad as the crime. Of course this is not contradictory if one takes it in the context of crime in general, where we find the same; women benefit from a more indulgent attitude with much more frequent use of suspended sentences or community orders. It is therefore quitte consistent that people are more lenient on women offenders in this context, as with all other crimes..
