PRESS RELEASE DISTRIBUTION SUSPENDED: The epidemic of false rape allegations – 77% of rape accusations made to the police are false, according to government statistics. Political party demands the re-introduction of anonymity for those accused of sexual offences, until and unless convicted.

[Update. The company we engaged with to distribute the press release, Pressat, suspended the press release, stating:

… due to the lack of supporting evidence surrounding the referenced government statistics, the campaign has raised validity concerns amongst media queries and has also been rejected by a number of 3rd party partners. This has unfortunately resulted its distribution being halted.

They took this position despite my having provided the supporting evidence they’d asked for, an extract from William Collins’s book, here (calculation of 77% of rape allegations made to the police being false is on p.4, highlighted in yellow). I’m seeking to re-engage with them, but their current position is that the press release won’t be re-published, and they’re giving us a refund.]

  1. As we know the most common reasons cited for such claims are either to cover infidelity or as revenge against a boyfriend who has “dumped” the woman/girl. What also gets missed is that rape and sexual assaults do not have to be proven to be true for the “victim” to be paid circa £8000 compensation by the Criminal Injuries Board.
Of course for those seeking revenge the indignity of arrest, giving samples and spending time in prison cells would be good enough but then having the name splashed in local or even national media will add to their success, as the label is mud that sticks.
At most a ticking off awaits the accuser who is found to be false , in the meantime their victim will have had his life turned upside down even if no charges are ever laid or if found innocent.
There are perverse incentives a plenty. at least this would give some limited protection to innocent men, so easily accused.
