Press release – Lesbians and children put at risk of injury or death by the refusal of UN Women to acknowledge female-perpetrated violence

The following is the main content of a press release sent to a considerable number of UK-based journalists this morning, the overwhelming majority of whom opened it. It takes up the remainder of this blog piece:

LONDON / December 2, 2022 – UN Women recently launched its annual “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.” (1) But the campaign is avoiding mention of female-perpetrated violence, of domestic violence within lesbian couples, and violence from lesbians against their children.

Mike Buchanan, leader of the political party Justice for Men & Boys, said this:

“It has long been known that violence is more common in lesbian relationships than in heterosexual relationships. A woman is markedly more likely to be the victim of violence from a female partner than from a male partner.

The refusal of UN Women to acknowledge female-perpetrated violence also puts children at risk of injury or death. This is true for the children of both lesbian couples and heterosexual couples.

It has been known for DECADES that when it comes to intimate relationships, women are at least as violent as men. Indeed, the largest ever international review of the subject, the Patner Abuse State of Knowledge project (PASK13), found that violence was bi-directional in the majority of (heterosexual) couples in which there was violence. But in the significant minority of (heterosexual) couples where the violence was always uni-directional, the perpetrator was slightly more than twice as likely to be the woman as the man.

The narrative that domestic violence is a gender-based phenomenon – with women the overwhelming majority of victims, men the overwhelming majority of perpetrators – is a long-discredited lie, a decades-old hoax perpetrated by many organizations including UN Women and women’s charities in the UK.”

Three incidents illustrate the threat:

  1. Yvonne Wu of New York City discovered her ex-girlfriend cavorting with her new love interest. Wu allegedly opened fire, shooting Li in the chest and mortally wounding the new girlfriend. Wu was arrested and charged with murder (2).
  2. Brittney Taylor attacked her girlfriend, causing multiple injuries to her face and head. Taylor was arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence assault (3).
  3. Two weeks ago, April Wright and Rachel Wright pled guilty to repeatedly punching a 10 year-old boy, dislocating his neck bones and causing his death. Prosecutors noted the child had been “repeatedly isolated and tortured” by the lesbian couple (4).

These are not isolated incidents. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that same-sex female couples have substantially higher lifetime victimization rates than same-sex male couples for domestic violence, rape, and/or stalking (5):

  • Lesbian: 44%
  • Gay: 26%

In Australia, a survey of over 5,400 LGBTIQ persons reported similar findings. The national survey found 41% of female respondents and 28% of male respondents reported having been in a relationship in which the partner was abusive (6).

Concerns for the safety of lesbian women recently have been expressed in Georgia (7), Malawi (8), and South Africa (9), as well.

Domestic violence can be prevented, but government officials need to end the shroud of silence that envelopes female-perpetrated abuse. The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance (10) calls on the United Nations and on Member Nations to assure that all forms of domestic violence, regardless of the sex of the perpetrator, are recognized and addressed.
