A piece on the BBC. Holly Warton is a “tree whisperer” – this is where postmodernism inevitably leads. An extract:
Holly feels a strong connection to nature which has led her to connect with the flora around her. She says that when she communicates with the spirts of trees she hears a voice in her head that is not her own.
“The language that they use is very different from my own language. And it’s very clear to me that it’s something that’s coming from outside me.
“But different people have different ways of receiving the messages. Some people will feel a sensation in their bodies, some people will see images that kind of serve as symbols for the conversation. But I do hear a voice.”
I had a chat today with Woody, a tree in the grounds of Buchanan Castle. He spoke in a language very different to my own – French, and cultivated. I mentioned the matter to one of the gardeners, Hamish, who suggested Woody may have been cultivated in France. He (the tree, not Hamish) told me:
J’en ai marre des femmes folles, je vais mon propre chemin.
(I’m sick of crazy women, I’m going my own way.)
Woody may be the first of many Trees Going Their Own Way (TGTOWs). Trees are famously tolerant – have you ever heard one complain? – but even they have their limits.
