I’m delighted to announce that we’re starting a series of YouTube livestreams, starting at 20:00 BST tomorrow, 28 May. The first will be a discussion between Elizabeth Hobson and Greta Aurora – Greta’s YouTube channel is here – and there’ll be a live Q&A. The link to the livestream is here.

In July 2019 I posted a blog piece with the snappy title, Matt Hancock (C, West Suffolk), winner of a Toady award in 2012, wears socks printed with “This is what a feminist looks like”. In common with all feminists, Hancock is a consummate liar.

Dominic Cummings has been giving evidence to select committees today. The Times has published this, the section relating to Matt Hancock (one of whose parliamentary nicknames is Matt Handjob, I am reliably informed) is this:

During his evidence, Cummings also took aim at Matt Hancock saying he gave false reassurances in January about preparations for the pandemic and repeatedly lied.

Cummings said the health secretary “should have been fired for at least 15-20 things” including “lying to everybody on multiple occasions in meeting after meeting in the Cabinet room and publicly”.

Asked about how Hancock lied, Cummings said that in the summer Hancock said that everyone who needed treatment had been given the treatment that they required.

“He knew that was a lie,” he said. “Because he had been briefed by the chief scientific adviser and the chief medical officer himself about the first peak. And we were told specifically that people did not get the treatment they deserved. Many people were left to die in horrific circumstances.”

Cummings claimed that Hancock assured Johnson in March that anyone being discharged from hospital would be tested for Covid before being sent back to care homes. He said this turned out to be “complete nonsense”.

“The government rhetoric was we put a shield around care homes. It’s complete nonsense. Quite the opposite of putting a shield around them, we send people with Covid back to the care homes,” Cummings said.

He also said that Hancock claimed in a meeting in the Cabinet room that Sir Simon Stevens, the head of the NHS, and Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, were responsible for issues with the procurement of PPE.

Cummings said he asked Mark Sedwill, the then cabinet secretary, to investigate Hancock’s claims. “The cabinet secretary came back to me and said it’s completely untrue,” he added. “I have lost confidence in the secretary of state’s honesty in these meetings.”

The prime minister today told MPs that he has not heard Cummings’ evidence, but he denied his former aide’s claim that Hancock had been described as dishonest by senior civil servants.
