Suspended sentence for Elle Lewis, 24, who lied to police about abusive ex

Our thanks to Steve for this. The start of the piece:

A MUM-of-two [J4MB: Who is this article addressed to? Children? Why not “mother-of-two”?] lied about her abusive ex threatening her with a machete in a bid to get “revenge”, a court heard.

Elle Lewis, 24, who later admitted to police that she’d made up parts of her statement, was spared an immediate jail sentence on Friday after a Swindon judge heard she was a full-time carer for her two children, was remorseful and posed a low risk of harm to the public.

Imposing a 14-month prison sentence suspended for two years, Judge Peter Crabtree said: “Whatever the abuse you had suffered, you simply cannot take the law into your own hands in that way.” [J4MB emphasis: By imposing a suspended sentence, the judge demonstrated that as a woman, Lewis COULD take the law into her own hands, like countless women before her.]

Be a honey badger and go for the goolies

An interesting piece just published by TCW, concerning Professor Gad Saad, an evolutionary behavioural scientist and professor of marketing at Concordia University in Montreal. His latest book The Parasitic Mind: How Infectious Ideas Are Killing Common Sense was published two months ago.

Neil McClements, father, 50, wins £7,500 payout after being rejected for £40,000-a-year NHS job as he wouldn’t fit in with ‘millennial’ women who worked there

Our thanks to Mike P for this piece in the Mail, full text below. We can be sure that men have been passed over for employment and promotion in huge numbers for decades – particularly in the public sector, I’d suggest, where a higher proportion of senior people are women than in the private sector – but normally the sexism and ageism aren’t made explicit. Men don’t blow the whistle on this because they’d probably be destroying their future job prospects if they did. And you have to ask, what sort of compensation is £7,500 when the sexism and ageism led to him being denied a £40,000 pa job?

In 2008 I was passed over as a candidate for a consulting assignment by a feminist in the public sector. The man at my agency told me she’d never been known to hire a man, but would interview equal numbers of men and women to give the pretence of not being biased against men. She would find something in the CV of her preferred female candidate and claim it was a key issue, one not found in the men’s CVs.

A middle-aged father has won a £7,500 payout in an age and sex discrimination case after being rejected for an NHS job because he wouldn’t fit in with the ‘millennial’ women who already worked at the trust.

Despite being the best-performing candidate in an interview, Neil McClements, 50, was rejected for a project manager post after potential colleagues at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS trust in London were consulted on his application.

A hearing was told they thought the father-of-two was ‘nothing like’ the young woman he would be replacing and so a much younger female candidate in her 20s was selected instead, even though she had performed less well in interview.

Members of the team were predominantly female and aged in their early 30s, with one doctor describing herself as a millennial on social media.

Others were known to support social justice causes including feminism and gender equality. [J4MB emphasis. The two are, of course, contradictory.]

The NHS trust was ordered to pay Mr McClements – who is now the Chief Executive at health charity Haemochromatosis UK – a total of £7,580.14 in compensation.

When Mr McClements was rung to be informed he had not been successful, he was told it was because his would-be boss felt she would be uncomfortable giving instructions to someone old enough to have an 11-year-old daughter.

Now the panel, headed by Judge Tony Hyams Paris, has ruled he was the victim of both age and sex discrimination.

The hearing in Croydon, south London, was told Mr McClements – who attended business school at Cambridge University – was interviewed for the job as project manager at the NHS trust in July 2018.

The role – which paid around £40,000 a year – involved helping the health service adapt technology more quickly.

The tribunal heard that during his presentation Mr McClements, who was 47 at the time, used visual aids including a Minion backpack featuring the yellow characters from the Despicable Me film series.

‘He explained that Minions were playful, servile, cartoon film characters associated with a soundtrack of the song ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams,’ the tribunal heard.

‘During their questioning…we find that the panel sought to establish willingness to work for others that were younger than him and perform more menial tasks.

‘To this end, (he) was asked during his presentation ‘Will you be a minion?’

Mr McClements – who has a lengthy background in technology – claimed he was being asked if he would be willing to ‘do mundane tasks’ or be ‘a servile follower or subordinate of a person in power’.

Compared to the other candidates, Mr McClements achieved the highest scores from the combined panel, which included Dr Charlotte Lee, who he would report to, and Jenny Thomas, programme director.

After the interview he and the other top ranked applicant – a woman in her 20s – were introduced to other members of the team, including a woman named Rose, the tribunal was told.

They were then asked what they thought of him as part of an exercise to see who would be the ‘best fit’.

As part of the evidence the tribunal were shown tweets from Rose’s twitter account.

‘(She) described her interests as including ‘social justice, inequality feminist’,’ the panel said. ‘Many retweets shown to us were of a feminist or gender equality theme.

‘One retweet read ”London is the most diverse city in the UK but women are still paid less than men and there are too few of them in leadership roles”.

‘We were also shown (Dr Lee’s) Twitter account where she described herself as a ‘millennial’.’

Comments made by the team included questioning whether Mr McClements was too experienced, whether he was too senior and how he was ‘very different’ to the woman he was replacing.

The following day, after deciding to appoint the other candidate, Dr Lee rang Mr McClements, from Spalding, Lincolnshire, to tell him his application had not been successful.

‘(She) told him…that a main factor in the decision was that (she) was ‘uncomfortable asking you to do things given you have an 11-year-old daughter’,’ the panel said.

‘We concluded that the point (she) was making was that she would find it difficult to manage someone who was much older than her; the reference to the daughter was to illustrate the maturity point.’

Supporting Mr McClements’ claims of age and sex discrimination, the panel concluded: ‘We were concerned that both conscious and unconscious bias were at play and that their focus on finding a person who was the ‘best fit’ led them to take into account factors which were discriminatory.

‘We did not think (they) fully appreciated that the danger in going down that path was that they would be more inclined to choose a candidate that was more like them.

‘We find that the decision was ultimately made by Dr Lee and Mrs Thomas having been influenced by team members. We find this grouping to be predominantly female and with an average age of 30-32.’

Regarding the decision on sex discrimination, the tribunal noted ‘the concentration on finding the ‘best fit’ when viewed against the gender make-up of the grouping of people who contributed to the decision.’

It also pointed to ‘the unconventional process adopted…the fact that (Mr McClements) achieved the highest score, and the views retweeted by Rose, which we reasonably concluded that she supported and had an affinity with.’

An additional claim of failing to make a reasonable adjustment due to a disability was dismissed.

Crystal Culhane, 22, ‘obsessed by men’, avoids jail after luring her ex into a trap so her new lover could beat him so badly with baseball bat that police found brain matter on the pavement

Our thanks to Mike P for this. An extract from the long article:

Judge Sarah Munro, said Culhane was a ‘determined, persuasive and manipulative liar’ capable of conning professionals into sympathising with her.

‘Crystal Culhane did not, as the jury found, intend you (White) to attack him as brutally as you did but she did intend I am sure that you cause him considerable harm.

‘She did not anticipate that you would use a weapon.

‘You took the baseball bat with you either from the flat or from one of your vehicles, and as you now accept, you cornered Paul Flory in an alleyway and you battered him all over his head and body, literally beating his brains out.

‘The attack lasted no more than 50 seconds and you left him for dead as you ran back to your flat with the bat, wiping the bat on the grass as you fled.

‘Through the evidence, the reports and my own observation of you throughout the trial, it is clear that you, Crystal Culhane are a complex young woman of 22.

‘On the one hand you are an attractive, beautifully groomed and dressed young woman who is concerned at all times for your appearance.

‘You are, as I have seen from your text messages, articulate and literate. You are nowhere near as stupid as you would, when it suits you, have people believe.

‘Indeed, the evidence showed you to be a determined, persuasive and manipulative liar who is capable of deceiving others including professionals.

‘On the other hand you undoubtedly had a very difficult childhood, you were in care, you had special educational needs and you were unable to achieve academically.

‘You are prone to severe anxiety. You have been diagnosed with PTSD after a very unpleasant car crash. However you were able to gain employment as a carer.

‘You have also had considerable physical health issues. The probation officer assesses that you crave the attention of men.

‘You are somewhat inured to violence at their hands and you lack self-esteem or self respect. You may well use lies as a defence mechanism.’

Tim Starkey, defending Culhane said: ‘The domestic violence which she witnessed in her childhood, sadly seems to have been repeated in her own relationships.

‘She has been in four serious or long term relationships and in three of these she has experienced serious domestic violence and it maybe that she has come to accept that because of what she saw as a child, teenager and young adult in her own relationships.

‘A willingness to please and wanting to be loved is why she attracted men who recognised it and exploited it. You may think of that night she was caught between two violent men.

‘Something she spoke to me with pride about was her work as a carer. She had been doing that for two years before she was arrested.

‘She said to me she loved it. She talked about caring for people and loving that.

‘Something else which speaks to her determination to really turn her life around is the work she has done at ‘Funky Flowers’ the florists. It has given her a sense of purpose and a sense of self esteem.’

BBC: Men are around twice as likely as women to end up critically ill with Covid, from the age of 40 upwards.

Our thanks to Stu for this new BBC piece headlined, “Are Covid patients getting younger?” by Philippa Roxby. The issue of the gender balance among people ending up critically ill with Covid is only covered in the last of the article’s five sections, the related text being:

In intensive care, the average age of Covid patients in the second wave is 60.2 compared with 58.8 in the first wave.

According to analysis of 10,000 patients in intensive care in the last four months of 2020, men are around twice as likely as women to end up critically ill with Covid, from the age of 40 upwards. [J4MB: Of course it wasn’t pointed out that it’s obvious from the graph that men are OVER twice as likely as women to end up critically ill with Covid, from the age of 60 upwards.]

While most seriously ill men in intensive care were in their 60s, around 5% were in their 40s and 15% in their 50s.

Salmond accuses Sturgeon of misleading parliament

Our thanks to Stu for this. Of course the (male) BBC correspondent had to go in for some anti-Salmond deflection:

Alex Salmond has just turned up the heat on his successor with a submission that presents a direct and serious challenge to the reputation of Nicola Sturgeon – who was once his closest political ally.

What he no doubt considers as an attempt to secure justice, some others will see as a case of deflection and revenge.

Smack the Pony (Channel 4 comedy sketch show, 1999-2003)

I host two 90-minute-long men-only Zoom meetings on Sundays for Regarding Men, at 14:00 and 17:00. We talk about anything and everything in the first meeting – I allow people a few minutes to introduce themselves if they’re new to the meetings, and they can raise any subjects they want – while the second meetings are titled “Mike Buchanan’s Humour Group”, suitable for anyone who enjoys humorous materials, in any form.

At last Sunday’s Humour Group meeting an American (at least half the attendees are North Americans, normally, which adds welcome variety) mentioned he loved the Channel 4 comedy sketch show Smack the Pony, broadcast over 1999-2003. I loved it too, to my mind it remains to this day the funniest comedy sketch show written mainly by women, and performed mainly by women, in the history of British television. The Wiki page on the show is here.

We usually play a number of videos over the course of the meetings, so I’ve been checking out some of the videos of the show on YouTube. One gem is a “best of” compilation more than 21 minutes long, too long for our meetings, but I thought it worth posting a link here – enjoy.

The secret of the show’s success? As so often with comedy, truthful depictions of human nature. It’s why “political” comedy from such miserable people as Kate Smurthwaite and Nish Kumar is never funny other than to feminists and other “woke” people, a small proportion of the population, but one to which the BBC and other media outlets have pandered for so many years.
