Karen Wakeling, 47, is jailed after stealing £80,000 from her elderly dementia-sufferer mother to splash out on holidays, lingerie and beauty treatments

Our thanks to Mike P for this. On the rare occasions women are sent to prison, they always receive lighter sentences than men would have received under the same circumstances. A two year prison sentence seems short for stealing £80,000 from a dementia-suffering mother.

Tanya Iles, 34, mother-of-three who lied to police about ex’s call is spared jail sentence

Our thanks to Steve for this. Extracts:

A mother-of-three made up claims about her ex spouting abuse down the phone at her, a Swindon court heard.

Tanya Iles, 34, went to the police after receiving a call from her ex-partner – in breach of a court non-molestation order – checking childcare arrangements and informing her he had lost his phone.

But she claimed he had threatened her on the call, telling the police as much in a 90-minute interview. Her ex was arrested but, having videoed himself making the call, was able to unmask the lie. [J4MB emphasis. You have to ask why he videod himself making the call – presumably because he had reason to lie? Had her previous lies led to the court non-molestation order?]

Sparing Iles an immediate prison sentence for perverting the course of justice, Judge Jason Taylor QC said: “You need to understand this and you need to understand this very clearly that false allegations are easily made and difficult to refute – and that is why this is so serious.”…

Prosecutor George Threlfall said Iles’ ex went to Cornwall in mid-July, just days after the non-molestation order was made. It was there he lost his phone, through which he emailed his ex to arrange childcare.

He returned a couple of days later and, because he was due to care for the children the next day, called the woman to check on the arrangements. He took the precaution of videoing the conversation using a friend’s phone.

Iles called the police, telling them he had been abusive and threatening. She later went to the police station, continued the lie through an hour-and-a-half police interview and signed a statement.

Her former partner was arrested but was able to show officers the video of the calls. Iles was re-interviewed and admitted she had made the allegations up.

Mr Threlfall said: “The gravamen of an offence such as this is false allegations are easily made and difficult to refute and in this case Miss Iles was almost certain to be believed and indeed was believed [J4MB emphasis] until the police viewed the video of the telephone call which her former partner had taken the precaution of making.”

Nicholas Clough, defending, said his client had made the original call to police on the spur of the moment. “She bitterly regrets her actions.”

She was genuinely remorseful [J4MB… that her lies had been discovered?} and had three young children who would all suffer if she was jailed. [J4MB emphasis: There we go. The “get out of jail free card”.]

Mr Clough added: “This is probably her one and only brush with the criminal justice system. She may well be a woman who needs help and guidance rather than simply punishment.” [J4MB emphasis: Alternatively, she may well be a woman who needs punishment.]

Iles, of Affleck Close, Toothill, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice.

Judge Taylor sent her to the court cells for a couple of hours [J4MB emphasis: What a heartless beast the judge is!] before pronouncing sentence. He told her those convicted of perverting the course of justice almost inevitably go to prison because their crimes “strike at the very heart of the administration of justice”.

Describing her false report as a calculated act, Judge Taylor said: “You had lied about this offence. This went far beyond exaggeration. You deliberately attended the police station to make a false report and invented allegations over a 90-minute period before signing to say what you had said was the truth.”

Recognising her remorse and responsibilities to her children he suspended a 20-week prison sentence for two years, ordering she do 250 hours of unpaid work and 10 rehabilitation days.

He said: “If you commit any further offences let alone one as nasty as this you will going straight to custody.” [J4MB: No, she won’t. Women, especially women with childen, rarely do.]

Next steps for work on COVID-19 disparities announced

Our thanks to Nigel for this. An extract:

Minister for Equalities, Kemi Badenoch, [J4MB: There has never been a male Minister for Equalities] said:

“This government is rightly taking seriously the initial findings from the PHE report published earlier this week. However, it is also clear that much more needs to be done to understand the key drivers of the disparities identified and the relationships between the different risk factors.

“That is why I am now taking this work forward, which will enable us to make a real difference to people’s lives and protect our communities from the impact of the coronavirus.”

The full terms of reference for this work will be as follows:

  • Review the effectiveness and impact of current actions being undertaken by relevant government departments and their agencies to directly lessen disparities in infection and death rates of COVID-19. Factors to be considered – but aren’t limited to – should include age and sex, [J4MB emphasis] occupation, obesity, comorbidities, geography, and ethnicity;

Far more men than women are contracting COVID-19 and dying from it, so how does Ms Badenoch propose to “lessen disparities” with respect to sex? She doesn’t mean increasing the infection rates and deaths of women, the only alternative to to decrease the infection rates and deaths of men. I confidently predict we shall hear no government announcements on that. It will not even be a government objective.

Women’s group urges Parliament to reject ‘misogynistic’ MP’s amendments to Domestic Abuse Bill

The ‘misogynistic’ MP is, of course, the estimable and decidedly non-misogynistic Philip Davies. This article may be the first we’ve linked to from the Morning Star.

ITALY: Mara Carfagna MP (Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi’s party) proposes income tax reductions… for women only

Our thanks to Paolo, a Bronze party member – we have many members based outside the UK – for this story about Mara Carfagna MP, a former showgirl and model. He explains she was the minister for equal opportunities and is now vice president of the Chamber of Deputies, besides being a prominent MP for Forza Italia, She has signed off many laws in the past. He writes:

“We aim at what is essential, goes on the “azure representative” (Berlusconi’s party MP, my comment) we know stereotypes are fought through concrete actions. That is why we prepared an amendment to the economy relaunch decree (of the economy), first signature by Carfagna (Mara Carfagna, the MP) for different taxation between men and women. We propose a reduction of 3% of the first three tax rates on income (from work) up to incomes of 55.000 Euros. This way tax rates would decrease from 23, 27 and 38% to 20 24, 35% for the part pertaining to the income from women’s work…”

(My translation of the first part of what follows.)
