Frank Zappa on socialism

Elizabeth Hobson is half my age (I’m 62) but we like many of the same artists, musical and otherwise  (e.g. William Blake). Tonight we had a Skype exchange on Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, my thanks to her for this:

Killer mother who robbed husband of his two twins by drowning them in the bath is now trying to take his house as she launches £30,000 divorce suit from psychiatric unit

Our thanks to Mike P for this. The start of the piece:

A grieving father whose twins were killed by their mum [J4MB: The man is referred to as a “father”, the woman who killed their children as “mum”] could lose the home he shared with them after she launched a divorce bid from a psychiatric unit.

Samantha Ford, 38, was jailed last year for drowning 23-month-old Jake and Chloe in the bath at her home in Kent on Boxing Day 2018.

Her actions were described as a twisted act of vengeance against her estranged husband, Steven, [J4MB emphasis] during a trial at the Old Bailey.

The mum was sentenced to 10 years – to be served at a psychiatric unit until she is deemed fit for prison – after entering a guilty plea of manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

But in a new blow to the children’s grieving father, he has now been told Ford is pushing for divorce, which he says could potentially see him lose his house – the home he shared with Jake and Chloe – in Charing, near Ashford.

Josie Cox, a contributor to Forbes, is a blithering idiot

Another ridiculous article, this time in Forbes, implying a causal link between increasing diversity on corporate boards and improved corporate performance – Coronavirus And The Gender Pay Gap: An Excuse To Avoid Uncomfortable Facts. Ms Cox writes:

Research shows that Fortune 500 companies with the highest representation of women on their boards significantly outperform others. And companies with a smaller gender pay gap are likely to be more successful at attracting female talent which translate directly into a healthier bottom line.

Followers of this website should not need no reminder of the evidence compiled by Campaign for Merit in Business many years ago, demonstrating a causal link between increased gender diversity on boards and corporate financial decline. The evidence is here.

The blithering idiot ends her article with this:

What will differentiate a satisfactory performance from an outstanding one might well be culture. There are of course many ways to safeguard corporate culture, but treating gender pay gaps with the attention and urgency they deserve is certainly a good place to start.

The attention and urgency that gender pay gaps deserve are precisely zero.

Philipp Tanzer: I am a Men’s Rights Activist

Philipp Tanzer

Our thanks to John for this piece in The Guardian. A BBC crew accompanied Philipp Tanzer on his trip to ICMI20 in Chicago. Philipp, a German who lives Scotland, would be the first to say he’s not a prominent MRA. Last October BBC Radio 4 broadcast a piece on the matter, our blog piece about it is here. The BBC crew showed not the slightest interest in interviewing prominent MRAs before, during, or after the conference. The piece in The Guardian:

Journalist Alvaro Alvarez follows Philipp Tanzer, a gay porn actor-turned-men’s rights activist, as he travels to Chicago for the annual International Conference on Men’s Issues. A sort of anti-feminism mopefest, it is ultimately unedifying yet bleakly fascinating.

I spoke to Alvaro Alvarez (a mangina, like all the men working on programmes about gender issues at the BBC, and indeed the mainstream media more generally) some months before the conference. It soon became clear – in the course of increasingly heated phone discussions – that he wasn’t planning to make a documentary expressing the slightest interest in, nor sympathy about, men’s issues, and he appeared astonished by my point about BBC output being relentlessly left-wing and uncritical of feminism and feminists.

The “documentary” will be broadcast on BBC Three – online only – next Tuesday, 21 April. The BBC piece on the programme is here and consists of this:

“I think as a men’s rights activist you are constantly being silenced”.

Philipp Tanzer is a former gay porn actor who now works as a hairdresser, artist and gallery owner in the Scottish Highlands.

He has been involved in the men’s rights movement for over 2 years, first attending the International Conference on Men’s Issues in London in 2018. It’s a summit where men and women who believe [J4MB: Men and women who KNOW] men are at a disadvantage in modern society convene to share their thoughts and a common ground.

Intrigued by the concept and the issues surrounding it, BBC journalist Alvaro Alvarez travelled with Philipp to the same Conference, this time in Chicago in August of last year, in an attempt to get under the skin of this movement and ultimately Philipp’s investment and fascination with it.

For Alvaro, confronted with a confusing setting where amongst other things domestic violence towards women is being downplayed by university professors; conversely Philipp is openly captivated, yet it soon emerges there is more to his own back story than meets the eye.

As part of his journey Philipp also meets with Graham Goulden, a retired police officer and Chief Investigator with over 30-years’ experience, who now works as a violence prevention trainer. Having had numerous heated exchanges on social media, Philipp and Graham agree to meet in person to talk through their alternate stances when it comes to men’s rights and their role in society.

We also hear from Tracie Farrell, a Research Associate with the Knowledge Media Institute, part of the Open University, who through her work has been delving into what has become known as the ‘manosphere’, a platform evolving within society where it is becoming easier to have a misogynistic opinion and vocalise it.

It goes against most logical thinking, [J4MB: It goes against NO logical thinking] but are we really starting to ‘flip the narrative’ so that women hold the power and men are subjugated by it? [J4MB: Hopefully. We point people to Warren Farrell’s “The Myth of Male Power”.]

Are we as a society designed to ignore men’s vulnerability? [J4MB: Yes, of course. Gynocentrism, anyone?] Has feminism gone too far? [J4MB: Ya think that might be a possibility? Getouttahere!!!]

Norman “Bites Yer Legs” Hunter RIP

It is with considerable sadness that I report the legendary former Leeds United footballer Norman “Bites Yer Legs” Hunter died today of CV19. I was an avid Leeds United fan from the mid-60s onwards (I was about eight at the time). Leeds United was a heartbreaking team to support. They won almost all the major trophies in the end, but usually after several failed attempts. Who could ever forget Allan “Sniffer” Clarke’s flying header off a Mick Jones cross, which won the FA cup final, 1-0 against Arsenal, in the 1971/72 season, the 100th anniversary of the competition? Not me, that’s for sure. It still leaves me misty-eyed.

Maybe 30 years ago I was in Leeds on business, and happened to mention I had supported Leeds United in my youth. The man suggested we go to a local pub for lunch, where he asked if I recognised the landlord, a middle-aged man with a huge belly. I didn’t. It was Norman Hunter.

Norman, we salute you. Nobody ever flattened other footballers quite like you. Respect.
