John James, domestic violence survivor, and Dr Teresa Silva, Professor of Criminology, University of Mid Sweden

Just published (video, 1:05:49).

John James is a British domestic violence survivor. In 2018 his book From the Darkness: My True Story was published.

He recently travelled to Sweden – a country with no homeless shelters specifically for men – to take part in a seminar about male victims of domestic violence. The seminar was hosted by Dr Teresa Silva, a Professor of Criminology at Mid Sweden University. Her university web page is here.

They were joined by Tom Caulfield, our Technical Director, who filmed and edited all the footage in this video, other than the final section, which was recorded on John James’s phone.

Priceless (video, 7:36). The start of the Wiki page on Titania McGrath:

Titania McGrath (@TitaniaMcGrath) is a parody Twitter account created and run by comedian and Spiked columnist Andrew Doyle. Doyle describes her as “a militant vegan who thinks she is a better poet than William Shakespeare.” Doyle has written a book, titled Woke: A Guide to Social Justice, under her name, which was published on 7 March 2019. The character had more than 460,000 followers as of February 2020. Elizabeth’s Homeschooling Adventure

With the shutdown of British schools to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, I am on the eve of my latest adventure – into homeschooling. I’ve spent an unconventional Mother’s Day, without my partner (who was embarked on a welfare run for a foodless friend), rearranging our dining room to serve as a classroom. Our seven year old boy was very helpful and both boys seem as excited as their parents at the prospect of this new challenge. Our final act of preparation today was to prepare timetables. I wanted the boys to have everything that they need to do written down so that they

  1. Know what they’re doing,
  2. Can manage their time by way of choosing what order they complete their tasks in, and,
  3. Can tick off what they do (I find that rewarding with my lists!).

Neither art nor science are included on the curriculum sent home from school – but both our boys agreed that they want to spend time working on these subjects, which I have no doubt we’ll all enjoy particularly.

I’ve started a vlog diary on YouTube where I will record the experience – I’m hoping that our boys will record some of theirs too, but they’ll be kept private.

Overall I’m feeling content, if a little nervous. We have discussed homeschooling before – most recently when our ten year old boy returned home reporting that he’d been fed the blank slate theory (that men and women are identical and that any differences in their life choices that can conceivably be construed as disadvantaging women must be the result of discrimination). I can happily share that our boy was not taken in for a second and that the lesson led to us having a fun and engaging conversation in which he explained the evolutionary basis of sex differences to me and I filled him in with evidence from infant human and primate studies! I did also speak to the teacher responsible who informed me on the phone that “We were smashing stereotypes – because everybody deserves to have a ball to play with!”, I didn’t stay on the line long after that, some things are lost causes. But we’ve been paralysed in making the leap away from state provided education for fear of us doing a poor job – now we’ll find out if we’re up to it either way!

I’ve started pulling together a selection of books that I believe will be good additions to our lessons – from the cartoon franchise based, ‘The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia’ and the comic novel ‘Camelot 3000’ which I hope they’ll enjoy reading, to several books on myths and legends (the old stories are so archetypically important), and several more about space (for a healthy dose of awe), to Steven Pinker’s ‘Enlightenment NOW’ which I plan to read excerpts from to prompt high level discussions of ideas. I love sharing books with our boys and am thrilled that we’ll have so much more time to do so over the course of the school shutdown, at least.

I do hope that our readers had a happy Mother’s Day and ask that you, please, wish me and my family good luck in this adventure!

A free photography course, a hard skin remover… J4MB going the extra mile for its followers

Every now and then we post things that have little or nothing to do with gender matters, but which we feel might be of interest to the estimable people who follow this blog. Today we have two such things:

Electric Foot File, DIOZO Rechargeable Waterproof Hard Skin Remover with 3 Rollers and 2 speeds, Remove Cracked Heels and Dead Skin Within Minutes. A steal on amazon.co.uk at £13.99. Your feet will thank you.

Chris Bray is an award-winning Australian photographer, who first came to prominence for his work for Australian Geographic. He used to run a course, “Photography Made Easy”, for which he charged attendees AUS$480.00. He later put the course on YouTube as a free course in ten parts, which I’ve just finished, and recommend highly. Enjoy. I later bought the handbook on Kindle.

Why you should join the Free Speech Union

We recently posted a piece about how Robinson College, Cambridge, refused to even meet with us in relation to our wish to explore the possibility of booking their conference facilities in 2022, for an International Conference on Men’s Issues. They claimed that allowing us to book their facilities would breach their policies in relation to Prevent, the government’s anti-terrorism strategy.

In response to this and other efforts by organizations (or private individuals e.g. students and others at Cambridge university) to deny us freedom of speech – memorable examples include Amnesty International (2015), Cambridge and Winchester universities (2019) – I’ve just joined the Free Speech Union. Full membership costs £4.95 for monthly membership, or £49.95 for annual membership. Lower prices (£2.49pcm / £24.95pa) for discount membership.

Established recently by the Spectator columnist Toby Young, the FSU is an ambitious and potentially important venture, and I urge supporters of J4MB to become members, and inform the FSU why they’re doing so. If you join, please post some comments in response to this blog piece, explaining why you’ve done so.

The FSU website has a link to a video (10:08) of Toby Young speaking outside a college at – appropriately for J4MB – Cambridge university. From the home page of the FSU website:

Free speech is the bedrock on which all our other freedoms rest, yet it is currently in greater peril than at any time since the Second World War. The Free Speech Union is a non-partisan, mass-membership organisation that stands up for the speech rights of its members. If you think there’s a risk you’ll be penalised for exercising your legal right to free speech, whether it’s in the workplace or the public square, you need the protection of the Free Speech Union. How might we protect you?

  • If you find yourself being targeted by a digital outrage mob on social media for having exercised your legal right to free speech, we will mobilise an army of supporters.

  • If a petition is launched calling for you to be fired, when you’ve done nothing other than exercise your legal right to free speech, we’ll organise a counter-petition.

  • If you’re no-platformed by a university—a feminist professor who challenges trans orthodoxy, for instance—we’ll encourage you to go to law and organise a crowdfunding campaign to pay your costs.

  • If newspaper columnists and broadcasting pundits start attacking you for dissenting from orthodox views and opinions, we could get our allies in the media to come to your defence.

  • If you’re punished by your employer because you’ve exercised your lawful right to free speech, we’ll do our best to provide you with legal assistance.

Petition: Change the Sexual Offences Act so women can be charged with rape against males

I urge you to join me in signing this. It’s already received 16,600+ signatures.

Men are the victims of sexual abuse by women on a far larger scale than is generally supposed. In our last general election manifesto, the longest section (7 pages) was on sexual abuse. It starts with this, on p.31:

It will come as a surprise to many, but women are responsible for a substantial proportion of sexual offences, including sexual abuses of children. A website [link in the document] concerned with female sex offenders has a bibliography of over 900 academic studies, articles, and books on the subject, dating back to 1857.

People struggle to recognize women as perpetrators of sexual and non-sexual violence, in spite of the weight of evidence showing them to be frequent perpetrators of both. This is because we live in a culture which regards men as ‘actors’ and women as ‘acted upon’. The public has become conditioned to viewing men as perpetrators, and women as victims. Alison Tieman, a Canadian men’s human rights advocate, produced an insightful short video on this matter. [link in the document]

This culture leads to inequalities. Few women are held accountable for sex offences, including those women who sexually abuse children. It’s known from a major American survey (details below) that slightly over 25% of sex offences are committed by women against men (with no male accomplices). We would therefore expect the male/female ratio of people charged with sex offences to be a little under 3:1. In the UK, in 2013, the ratio was 146:1.
