I’m pleased to announce J4MB will be hosting the first National Conference on Men’s Issues – as opposed to an international conference – to be held in the UK. It will be held at a premier venue in Manchester on Sunday, 17 May, 2020. Details here. The event title is Domestic abuse is a men’s issue, too. We’re delighted at the range of speakers, the keynote speaker will be Professor Nicola Graham-Kevan, whose work is well known to many J4MB supporters.

Tickets are strictly limited, so I recommend you don’t wait long before ordering yours. In an case, I’d strongly urge you to order your ticket(s) before 7 March, for reasons explained in the document.

I hope to see many of our supporters at the event. On the preceding evening, Saturday, 16 May, I’ll be in the venue’s bar along with William Collins, Elizabeth Hobson and Natty Raymond. We look forward to meeting as many supporters as possible. Apart from William, we’ll also be in the bar on the evening of the event.

Appeal to fund Mike Buchanan’s attendance at the Conference on Men’s Issues, New Delhi, 21-23 February, 2020 – £1,500 TARGET MET

[Update 31.1.20: The target has been met, thanks to a final donation by Richard Smith, for £709. My warm thanks to everyone who donated to make this trip possible.]

It is widely agreed across the Men’s Rights Movement that the movement in India is the most advanced in the world. It follows that Men’s Rights Activists based outside India have things to learn from the Indian movement.

Anil Kumar is the leader of the Save Indian Family Foundation and is well known to MRAs around the world due to his talks at International Conferences on Men’s Issues. He spoke at our two London conferences in 2016 and 2018, the videos are here and here.

Anil has kindly invited me to attend his Conference on Men’s Issues in New Delhi in five weeks’ time, details here.

If you’d like to attend the event, you need to send an email siff.conference@gmail.com to confirm your attendance and to learn details about fees and the travel/visa/stay arrangements.

In an email to me, Anil wrote this:

The presentations, panel discussions, and interactions during the breaks and in the evenings will be in English as everyone has to learn English in school and most attendees are well educated.  It would be an interesting experience and new learning as ICMI is making breakthroughs in countries where the mother tongue in not English or a European language. This can help us in future in South East Asia, Japan, Russia or even China.

Regarding crowdfunding of your trip, this visit and next year’s ICMI in India will help worldwide solidarity on men’s human rights and provide an opportunity to learn about experiments and innovations from different regions of the world. It’s the new generation of confident young Indians that is taking on feminism and misandry. Anti-feminist groups and men’s activists are emerging in the neighbourhood of India, in South Asia. That’s almost 1.9 billion people, 25% of the world’s population, who read English as their second language. As India is so big, its feminist policies impact neighbouring countries as well, and our men’s movement is impacting other countries.

I’ve launched a crowdfunder to help me meet most of the cost of the trip, with a goal of £1,500.  Thank you for your support.

I have suffered sexual harassment, says minister Victoria Atkins

A piece on the BBC website. Victoria Atkins is a Women & Equalities Minister, with a long record of not giving a flying f*** about men’s and boys’ isssues, including MGM, on which she had a lengthy exchange with Philip Davies, at no point expressing the slightest interest in the harm always caused by MGM. The start of the BBC piece:

Women and Equalities Minister Victoria Atkins has spoken of her experiences of workplace sexual harassment, as she urged others to share their stories.

In one example, the minister revealed, someone had sent her an email “that showed a great interest in my footwear”, after a public appearance.

“That was something that made me feel uncomfortable,” she told LBC radio.

Oh no! A woman was made to feel uncomfortable about her shoes!! We need legislation to prevent this!!!

Laurence Fox – interesting contribution to last night’s Question Time

I’m a lifelong fan of James Fox’s iconic work in 1960s British cinema and have been aware of rumours that his son, Laurence, is (as they say) ‘based’. His performance on last nights Question Time (16th January 2020) proved the rumours, beyond doubt! You can view his contributions only on YouTube (9:10) or, if you have a TV license, watch the full episode here.

You can follow Laurence on Twitter here. Laurence is a singer-songwriter whose music can be found here on YouTube as well as on streaming services. He has some interesting lyrics, for example, from ‘The Distance’:

They have put something in the water
They seek a cure for the conversation
They stole a march on your indecision
And the first to fall is laughter
Just to quell the long offended
They seek to murder your opinion

The light has been turned down on the age of reason
Replaced by blinding fires that burn wild across the region
For the wrong to rule
The good must just stand idly by

Laurence talked about the meaning of the song in the Oxford Mail.

He will be touring the U.K. in February, and I am hoping to catch his London performance. In this culture war, it’s vitally important that we support dissenting voices in any way possible!

Report on discrimination in drug offence sentencing

Our thanks to Paul for this email:

Mike, you might be interested in a piece in The Guardian – here. The piece was prompted by this report, which led to this consultation document.

A summary is that an analysis of sentencing for drug offences with respect to sex and ethnicity shows a very large disparity with men far more likely to be sentenced to prison and receiving longer sentences and much smaller but still significant effects that black and ethnic minority men receive longer sentences than white men.

The consultation bizarrely makes no direct reference or proposal with respect to men at all and The Guardian naturally focusses on the racial aspect of this but the biggest effect and it is large is that men are much more likely to receive jail sentences which will on average be longer than women for the same offence and with the same factors taken into account in sentencing.

Not a surprise but good to see it in a report.

There is an anomaly in the data which may mean the effect on men in general is understated. The probability for men receiving an immediate custodial sentence is given as the same as the probability for the racial analysis of white men receiving a custodial sentence and not as you would expect a value between the white male and black and ethnic minority male values. I believe this means that the white male rather than average male value has been used to try to downplay (the in any case huge) difference in treatment of men compared to women.

In the consultation paper it is explicitly stated that there is a requirement for equal treatment but oddly there is no explicit mention or focus on the massive disparity between the treatment of men and women.

Unfortunately there is no raw data so no double checking or further analysis possible.
