Conferences

[Notes added after original posting. There have been five International Conferences on Men’s Issues (ICMIs) to date, the first was held in Detroit (2014), later ones in London (2016), Gold Coast, Australia (2017), London (2018) and Chicago (2019). The next ICMI will take place over November 14-19, 2020, and will have up to 120 speakers – details here.]

Playlists of all the conference presentation videos (and more, including speaker interviews) can be found on our YouTube channel, here. Since 2019 Mike Buchanan has been personally responsible for deciding who will organize future ICMIs, and where, in Europe and North America. If you have a potential interest in hosting and/or financially supporting a future ICMI in these geographical areas, please contact him (mike@j4mb.org.uk).

In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic the first National Conference on Men’s Issues in the UK, was held on 7 June, 2020, as a virtual conference. The title was, “Domestic Abuse is a Men’s Issue, Too”. Details of the event, including links to the conference video playlist and individual presentation videos, are here.

The 2019 Chicago conference is over. Every ICMI has been better than the last, and this one was no exception. There were two parallel streams of presentations, and much thought had been given to activities beyond the presentations. The venue was a large modern hotel with excellent conference facilities, both accommodation and the conference being in the same venue was a major factor in helping people bond. As with the previous conferences, not a single protester turned up. There were maybe 15 British and Irish people in attendance, and people from many other countries. The attendance was the largest in the conference series to date. Media organizations in attendance included the BBC and Bloomberg. There was livestreaming from the conference, for the first time.

I was the MC in one of the two presentation rooms, so I didn’t get to see the talk given by Philip Davies MP, but I was told it went down very well. It’s here (video, 49:49). He also gave a talk at the 2016 conference in London, about the gender justice gap. Men are treated far more harshly than women by the criminal justice system, a gender inequality which predictably doesn’t trouble feminists.

Alison Tieman, the key person behind the conference, was unable to attend, after being stopped and turned back by American border officials at the Canada / US border. She will not be allowed into the US for the next five years. The reason(s) are as yet unclear. Karen Straughan did a great job in her absence, helped by many volunteers.

Elizabeth Hobson, our Director of Communications, was unfortunately unable to attend due to a family emergency, and offered to present her talk over the internet.  Only minutes before she was due to speak, rainwater (from a major storm) started to stream through the ceiling, just feet away from the stage. The problems didn’t end there. After she started to speak, there were continuous breaks in the sound, so we had to ask her to stop. Natty Kadifa valiantly stepped into the breach, and read out the rest of the presentation off her mobile phone. The transcript of Elizabeth’s presentation Reforming Chivalry – Criminal Justice and Rehabilitation, is here.

My talk Feminism sows the seeds of its own destruction was well received, including the section on abortion being a men’s issue, the first time this has been covered in an ICMI talk, to the best of my knowledge. The transcript is here, while the video is on the conference presentations playlist.

Tom Caulfield, our Technical Director, was filming the presentations for the fourth year in succession, and was on great form, as always. I had the pleasure of surprising him with the inaugural Quentin Tarantino Award for Directing Excellence, he gave a short but funny and moving acceptance speech.

During the closing ceremony Paul Elam announced the locations of some future conferences. Three more ICMIs are currently being planned, as of July 2020:

    • November 14-19, 2020.
    • Anil Kumar, India, February 2021.
    • J4MB, United Kingdom, August 2021.

Bettina Arndt update

Just received:

Hi Everybody,

Are more women falsely accusing men of rape or simply being caught out making these allegations? Maybe we are now just seeing more journalists reporting these cases instead of pretending they never happen.

Whatever the reason I’m now finding myself posting comments on a steady stream of such cases, including some, like Sara Jane Parkinson whose story I broke in January, where women have been sent to prison. That’s rare, of course. More often than not these women get off scot-free, even when their lies have sent men to prison, destroyed families and cost fortunes in legal fees for the wrongly accused.

I seem to be talking every few weeks to men in this circumstance. Not only the men but their mothers. It is particularly distressing talking to weeping women who are always amazed that our legal system is now so intent on denying their sons’ proper justice.

My new video features one such mother. She’s one of the rare lucky ones. Her 18-year-old son was recently found not guilty after a long rape trial where, amazingly, the jury stood and applauded the newly acquitted young man when he left the courthouse. It seems the jurists were left in no doubt about his innocence after his accuser’s extraordinary court appearances which left her web of lies in tatters. The 12,000 messages from her phone showed she was prone to juggling multiple partners at any one time and DNA evidence revealed sperm deposits from two other men in her vagina on the night in question, but none from the accused.

The family is trying to persuade the police to charge the young woman with perjury but face an uphill battle.

I hope you will listen to this moving story and help me circulate it. https://bettina.social/2MfsR43

Please like my video and make sure you are subscribed. It’s so frustrating seeing my YouTube numbers dropping off due constant censorship.

Jordan Peterson’s ThinkSpot

I’m hoping my YouTube problem will be solved soon, since it looks like Jordan Peterson is going to accept me as an early contributor to his new ThinkSpot platform. That will eliminate the censorship problems and introduce me to a whole new audience which is pretty exciting.

I’ve spent the last few weeks putting together videos of talks for big men’s conferences in Toronto and Chicago this month. I was supposed to be speaking at these events, but my cycling accident meant the travel posed too much risk for my newly-healed bones. Hence, we’ve made a huge effort to produce lively video presentations – which you’ll probably end up seeing on the ThinkSpot platform.

Music teacher in the clear.

Regular viewers of my videos will remember the music teacher falsely accused by some of his female students. At the time I interviewed the poor man the police and Department of Community Services had decided the accusations didn’t stack up but the Department of Education was still refusing to allow him back into NSW schools. Well, they have finally lifted the ban – so that’s good news. Let’s hope his life settles down now although it’s hard to imagine how he will ever totally recover from the damage caused by the malicious social media campaign against him. Here’s a link for those of you who missed out on that video.

My new website

At last my website is up and running, months after a shonky operator took it off air. It would be great if you could all have a quick look to give it some new traffic. My website is the best place to find all my videos, my most significant articles, recent blogs and media interviews plus you can read introductions to all my recent books. A big thank you to Mirul Mohd for making this happen – I’m thrilled with the way it is all working out. We’re just ironing out the final glitches now.

Forthcoming events.

We’ll probably be adding an events calendar, particularly if my #MenToo tour takes off. I’m starting that in the second week of October: Sunshine Coast, Mon Oct 7; Bundaberg, Wed Oct 9 and Townsville, Friday Oct 11. So, save the dates and let me know if you can help with promoting the events. I will be sending out full details as soon as they are available. Or contact Fan-Force and they’ll let you know what’s happening.

UNSW – next stop in my campus tour

After endless delays we finally have the next campus talk booked for UNSW in Sydney. Details are: Tuesday September 24 from 6.00 pm at the Red Centre Theatre. Members of the public are welcome to attend and I’d love some supporters to be present – particularly to video any hostile activity from protesters.

Cheers, Tina

Elizabeth’s photo shoot!

I recently had the pleasure of mucking about in a Brixton studio wearing my favourite dresses, being photographed by Anthony J Corniche III. The purpose was to get some decent shots for the Lovely Ladies of the Men’s Movement charity calendar. Their team has now chosen some snaps for their exclusive use, allowing me to share the rest of the roll.

Huge thanks to AJCIII for his hard work. His account of the day was shared on Twitter earlier:

”She’s a MONSTER. Turned up drunk. Set the dressing room alight trying to smoke a hair roller

Could hardly stand & swung for anyone that tried to walk behind her

These were shot with a 500mm lens from across the road, for safety.”

Our recollections differ, just slightly! The full album can be viewed here.

Battle of Ideas, London, November 2-3 – now with added J4MB!

Mike and I are pleased to confirm that we’ll be attending the Battle of Ideas at London’s Barbican Centre again this year. The event (the fifteenth in the series) takes over the building and fills it with debates on a range of topics, and many interesting people.

I am particularly pleased to announce that I have been invited to speak on a panel – From Peterson to Incels – is there a generation of ‘lost boys’?

Why pretty women should NEVER be feminists…

Daisy Cousens is a delightful young Australian lady, who I had the pleasure of meeting at the Gold Coast conference in 2018. She always looks like she’s just stepped off the set of Gone With the Wind. It must be exhausting looking that good all the time, we thank her for making the effort. Her YouTube channel is here, an example of her videos is one with 100,000+ views in the past 11 months, Why pretty women should NEVER be feminists… (video, 10:02).
