Northern Ireland secretary Karen Bradley admits she had no idea people in the country voted on sectarian lines before she was promoted to crucial Cabinet job

There surely cannot have been even one male Tory MP who knew so little about politics in Northern Ireland as Karen Bradley when she was appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. The start of the piece:

Karen Bradley admitted today she did not understand the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland before being promoted to the Cabinet post overseeing the province.

In an astonishing confession, she admitted to not knowing Unionist and Nationalist parties do not compete with each for votes but instead vie for support within their own communities.

And the Northern Ireland Secretary said it was not until after she was appointed to the crucial job she appreciated how ‘incredibly different’ the province was to her own Staffordshire constituency.

Sophie Walker, leader of the U.K. Women’s Equality Party, urged her 45,000 members to back the campaign for a second referendum on Brexit, and said women’s needs had been ignored by a “small group of white men’’ on both sides of the debate.

Ahead of the party’s conference this week, Walker said she wants to “re-shape the people’s vote into something meaningful for women.”
