Sharing hate posts online could lead to six months’ jail as judges recommend harsh punishments for internet trolls who torment racial, religious or sexual minority groups
Our thanks to Elizabeth Hobson, Director of Communications, for this. Presumably “tormenting” white male Tory MPs on social media will remain okey-dokey. An extract:
Professor Anthony Glees, director of the Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies, described the guidelines as bizarre, saying they were ‘not strict enough where they should be strict, too severe where greater leniency is called for’.
‘Only three years for hate speech that leads to people getting killed? Ridiculously soft,’ he said.
‘But six months for “hate trolling”? Are there enough prison places to lock up these hate trolls?’
He said the law needed to distinguish between ‘young and foolish’ individuals who say silly things and ‘really dangerous radicalisers and purveyors of violence who exploit the social media to wreak havoc and death’.

Women’s Equality Party ‘very proud’ of election results after first ever Hackney candidate
Our thanks to Sandra for this. Sophie “Doughnuts” Walker is proud of Harini Iyengar losing. The end of the piece:
Sophie Walker, WEP leader, tweeted: “Love this woman @Harini_Iyengar. She’s an inspiration to me and so many others. Congratulations on a brilliant campaign that has laid the foundation for a bright future.”
Party co-founder Catherine Mayer, who campaigned for Iyengar in Hackney, tweeted: “Plus @Harini_Iyengar also won the support of 12.8 per cent of voters in the council elections for Dalston ward. That’s what I call multi-tasking.”
Debbie Abrahams axed from shadow cabinet over bullying claims
Our thanks to Nick for this. An extract:
The BBC’s political correspondent Iain Watson said he understood the announcement followed an HR investigation into allegations of bullying by an unspecified number of staff.
The BBC understands the investigation upheld complaints and found that Ms Abrahams engaged in a pattern of bullying behaviour towards her staff employed by the Labour Party.

Elliot Gulliver-Needham, University of Oxford student: “The Oxford Union should not welcome Jordan Peterson”
Our thanks to Stu for this, a reminder that not all Special Snowflakes are women. The start of the plonker’s piece:
Jordan Peterson is a charlatan. Let’s be completely honest about what he represents. Through watching his speeches and reading his book, it becomes clear that everything he says is either incredibly vague, or flat out wrong. While I am in favour of inviting individuals who I disagree with to speak at the Union, I do not think we should be inviting a man to speak who has nothing of worth to say, and who actively harms debate.
It goes downhill from there. The comments stream is interesting, though.
Hunt for ‘nasty man’ who shot cat with airgun

Times caption: Lili Alexander and her cat Maximus
A piece in today’s Times:
Neighbours of a girl aged seven who offered “all her pocket money” to catch a “nasty man” who shot her cat in the face with an airgun have pledged more than £1,000 to help her. Lili Alexander, of Ruislip Manor, northwest London, was “horrified” when Maximus came home with a pellet embedded below his eye, requiring stitches. The crime carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail.
Why is it assumed – by Lily or others – that the culprit must be a man? What an example of deep-rooted misandry. British women alone have killed 10 million unborn children in the past half century, yet a woman couldn’t have shot an airgun at a cat?

‘It is an impossible burden on anybody’ – Victor Nealon, 54, now seeking compensation for wrongful attempted rape conviction, after serving 17 years in prison
Our thanks to Sean for this. A particularly shocking case of its type. The start of the piece:
An Irish man who spent 17 years in prison before his rape conviction was overturned is now seeking compensation in the UK Supreme Court.
Victor Nealon, 54, who is originally from Dublin, was found guilty of attempted rape and was given a life sentence after his trial at Hereford Crown Court.
He served 17 years in jail – 10 more than the seven-year minimum term – after he persisted in asserting he was innocent. [J4MB emphasis}
He suffered a defeat at the High Court and then lost his case in the Court of Appeal.
Now, former postman Mr Nealon is appealing the decision in the Supreme Court in London.
