William Collins: The Fight for Universal Suffrage in the UK

Those with a keen interest in gender politics are surely aware that the coming 6 February will be a historic anniversary on two counts:

  • the centenary of The Representation of the People Act (1918)
  • the fifth anniversary of the launch of Justice for Men & Boys (2013)

A tip of the hat to Ewan Jones, the intrepid Welsh videomaker, for recording a video interview (1:30:41) with William Collins, on the fight for universal suffrage in the UK. We encourage you to read the brief video description before watching the piece.

William Collins will be speaking at the July conference, his talk title is, “Men and boys in the UK: Edited lowlights”. The speaker list is here.

  1. For anyone interested there is an article in the latest issue of History Today (the “February” edition) by Fern Riddell. Making the points that the Suffragettes conducted a terrorist bombing campaign on some scale. And charts the way this has been ” sanitised”. So there is much about the women being in Prison but nothing about some of the crimes that they committed. I was surprised myself at the scale of the bombing and arson campaign.
Once again one would think feminists of the women are “strong and fearless” variety might want to laud this warrior aspect. But again a confluence of chivalry and “women are universally good” conspires to a “Downton Abbey” version of well turned out ladies marching, imprisoned for “speaking out”. Ladies who ,of course, suffered egregiously in prison as they were above such things.
