Take the rule that the masculine trumps the feminine when referring to a group that contains at least one man. In French, 10 sisters and one brother are collectively “heureux” – happy in a masculine way. Under proposed inclusive rules they would be “heureux.euse.s”. [J4MB – surely feminists would demand in this case “heureuse.eux.s”? Are the French really going to think at length about how to speak or write their language? One hopes not.]

I read this delightfully funny. I suppose the good news is that many European languages’ have more “genders” than just “masculine” and “feminine” such as Czech and Polish and Chechen has 6 so more possibilities there. While we all could speak Hungarian, Turkish or Finnish if we wanted to be gender free (or indeed Mandarin). I have to hand it to them though the French do do linguistic battles with panache.

It has always seemed ridiculous to me, to attach gender to things which have none, and this has always put me off learning such languages in depth.
I believe Japanese is also gender-free; which is why it is perhaps easier to learn than many other languages, and written Japanese is certainly fun to learn.
The best way to learn a language, of course, is to live in the country, but there are some countries where I would not want to live, and this is perhaps a more important consideration than any difficulty regarding grammar.
We should, naturally, avoid those countries where feminists have such a noticeable influence.

Damn. I used to comfort myself with the reflection that English is the only language in which these originally American and always entirely baseless linguistic conflicts occur. Now that blanket has been snatched away.
