Quite. Hattie Harman and others have been rebuked by the ONS over the years for their dodgy stats. But they are politicians. Its pretty rare indeed for a public servant to be so.
Of course the feminist Ms Saunders has to exaggerate the figures. Not least because they show first of all that Rape is a very rare crime and indeed and even if all sexual offences are adding up to 3000 a year for the whole of England and Wales then it still means they are rare. Particularly if one considers that in recent years the Police and Courts have been catching up with the abusive rings of men in certain demographics. A look at the recent Crime stats shows that vastly more numerous are the crimes that get little prominence in policy but affect far more people.
I was reflecting on the stats over the years. If one considers that anonymity was removed from defendants in the mid 1970s in order to increase reporting and convictions and in the subsequent decades there have been laws extending what is defined as rape, extensions of what is sexual assault, pretty much the reversal of the burden of proof to increase conviction rates and publicity and political campaigning on “rape culture”. And of course the population has increased by several millions. The actual numbers are in fact proportionately similar. No wonder exaggeration is the order of the day. Could it possibly be that after all that rape is after not an epidemic?
