Silencing Jim Webb, an American hero: the shame of the Naval Academy

Our thanks to Jack for this. Excerpts:

Jim Webb knows fighting, which is what the US Naval Academy is supposed to be about. But perhaps no longer.

Webb, a member of the Annapolis class of ’68, brought a Navy Cross, a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts home with him from Vietnam, among other decorations. That was just the beginning…

Webb was to have been honored Friday as a “distinguished graduate” by the Naval Academy Alumni Association, but withdrew Tuesday evening: “I am being told that my presence at the ceremony would likely mar the otherwise celebratory nature of that special day. As a consequence, I find it necessary to decline the award.”

Better he should have spit in somebody’s eye — but once an officer and a gentleman, always an officer and a gentleman, one supposes.

At issue was a paper he wrote in 1979 objecting to the admission of women to the nation’s military academies on the even-then-unfashionable, but still-not-unreasonable, grounds that assignment of women to frontline combat roles is at best disruptive, and at worst dangerous. Perhaps lethally so.

Webb could have been dead wrong about all of it, of course, even if 40 years of experience with gender integration strongly indicates otherwise. The Navy’s ongoing shipboard pregnancy epidemic and the difficulty most women have coping with traditional infantry-training standards suggests that the debate is far from settled.

Unless dissent can be beaten into the ground, of course — along with those who refuse to accept that political equity can trump basic biology without serious consequences.

New York City bars two Jewish men from sucking on the bleeding mutilated penises of eight-day-old baby boys, after six of the babies contracted herpes

An appalling report. Excerpts:

The city has banned two men from performing a controversial ultra-Orthodox circumcision practice [‘controversial’ seems to me a woefully inadequate adjective for the practise of sucking on the bleeding mutilated penises of eight-day-old baby boys] after babies were infected with herpes — but won’t release their names and will rely on them to comply on their own.

Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said Wednesday the city has identified two of the six mohels believed to be responsible for giving infants herpes through a ritual where they suck the blood from the infant’s newly circumcised genitals — known as metzitzah b’peh — and ordered them not to practice pending a herpes test.

“We expect them to comply,” she told the City Council. [elsewhere in the article it’s wide clear the city will not be making any checks on whether they comply.]

But Bassett said the names of the blacklisted mohels would not be made public…

The de Blasio administration repealed a requirement that parents sign a consent form before their child undergoes the ritual, imposed by former Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

Since the change, six babies have developed herpes after undergoing the ritual, it was revealed earlier this month…

Asked directly if it was ever appropriate for an adult to suck the penis of an infant, the mayor demurred.

“This is religious tradition and look I’m keenly aware of our Constitution,” he said.

We have to assume the major would object to other Jewish ‘religious traditions’ specified in the Torah, such as stoning adultresses to death, killing homosexuals, killing disobedient children, blasphemers… so why does he not condemn this? Because eight-day-old baby boys have no voice. Shame on him.

URGENT: International Conference on Men’s Issues, Australia – crowdfunder for video recording of presentations

With just NINE weeks left before the third International Conference on Men’s Issues in Gold Coast, Australia – the website is here – there is an urgent need for more donations to fund flights for Tom, the man who (with a colleague) did such a great job of filming and editing the presentations at the second International Conference in London, which are all here (scroll down to 8-10 July, 2016). Tom’s crowdfunder site is here. He needs to raise at least £1,200 in the next THREE weeks, or he won’t be joining us.

Videos of ICMI conference presentations are a unique historical record of the development of the Men’s Rights Movement, and are made available to the public for no charge.

I urge you to donate what you can to Tom’s appeal.

All the videos of the presentations at the first conference in the series, hosted by AVfM in Detroit in 2014, are here. They include mine.

‘Staring at boobs’ – one of six keys to a longer life for men

Our thanks to Martin for pointing us to some sound health advice in The Sun. There’s an interesting typo in a sentence near the start of the piece, shown in bold:

In the UK, men in general are not expected to lie as long as women – so maybe they need a little bit more help.

Licence to humiliate: Revenge porn offenders will NOT be locked up unless their shamed victim is ‘vulnerable’

Our thanks to Martin for this. Excerpts:

Men and women who humiliate ex-lovers and other victims with revenge porn may be spared jail even in the most serious cases, under sentencing guidelines proposed yesterday.

Those who post sexual images online to cause their victim major distress can escape with just a community punishment, they suggest.

Only if the victim is considered ‘vulnerable’ will there be a prison sentence, under new court rules.

Of course we all know what the final sentence will mean in practise, don’t we? In plain English:

Only if the victim is female, and the person posting revenge porn a man, will there be a prison sentence, under new court rules.

Further excerpts:

Kathy Gyngell, a fellow of the right-wing Centre for Policy Studies think tank, said: ‘To give an offender easier treatment because a judge thinks the victim can look after herself or himself is wrong.’…

Criminologist Dr David Green, director of the Civitas think tank, said: ‘We should go back to the basic principle that the punishment is the same whatever the characteristics of the victim.’

‘We should go back to the basic principle…’? David Green must be joking. That basic principle has never existed in the UK, when it comes to the differential sentencing of men and women.

British Columbia man pleads for family court reform in suicide note

Anyone who has worked for a lengthy time with men denied access to children following family breakdowns will know som who have committed suicide. Our thanks to Ray, himself estranged from his three adult children, for this. Excerpts:

Early on the morning of March 9, Jeramey apparently rigged his truck so that when he drove down an embankment at the end of Page Road in Abbotsford, B.C., his neck would break.

In a scrawled and bloody suicide note found in the truck, he wrote: “FAMILY LAW NEEDS REFORM. I recommend mandated lower costs and less reward for false claims of abuse. Parental Alienation is devastating. I loved my children as much as a husband and father could. I see no light. Recommend; an authority consistent during high conflict separations: It is exploited in family law.

“Sorry Dad and Angie. I’m very sorry.”

He was 45 years old when he died, and as his current wife, Angie, told Postmedia in a telephone interview from B.C. Tuesday, “He had a hard life. He could not catch a break.”…

This double whammy — a spouse making criminal allegations while custody and access applications are underway in family court — is known, Angie said, as “the silver bullet.”…

B.C.’s Family Maintenance and Enforcement Program was chasing him, because while he always paid something in support, it wasn’t what the court had ordered, and FMEP was moving to take away his driver’s licence and passport for failing to meet his financial obligations, Angela said. His ex was going to get his pension, if and when he retired.

He hadn’t seen his daughters, now about eight and 10, for almost 11 months. They were, Angela said, completely alienated from him. He never got to see his son by the lawyer.

In October last year, he was jailed for non-payment of support and breaching court orders. This strapping man had never been in jail before and was terrified.

Angela knew he was in despair, but weeps that she didn’t realize the depths of it. “I just didn’t know,” she sobbed on the phone. “If he could have seen those girls, he could have handled all this …

“His bank accounts were locked, he lost his homes, his vehicle, his business. You emasculate a man and take away his ability to provide … he’s a human being. He has limits.”
