Why 38 Degrees pulled the first petition supporting Philip Davies MP

There has been some puzzlement about why 38 Degrees pulled the first petition supporting Philip Davies MP. The mystery has been cleared up, a number of people who protested about their decision had the same response from them:

Dear <gentleman’s name redacted>,

Thanks for your email.
38 Degrees does not wish to host this petition as the speech that Philip Davies MP gave was anti-feminist. The feminist movement is one which promotes equality. [an amusing claim, albeit an outright lie, our emphasis]
We do not want petitions on our site that promote views that are anti-equality.
Best wishes,
<Lady’s name redacted> & the 38 Degrees team

  1. The petition wording on the 38 Degrees petiton was more comprehesive than the one at change.org and clearly showed where feminism was considered by signatories to be anti-equality. It reflected the claims of a negative campaign against Philip Davies, even to the words used. If an organisation felt confident that feminism really was about equality, they would let users pick: possibly simply inserting a cross link between the two petitions.

More of the story is on my personal blog for those curious, though I prefer to simply learn from the 38 Degrees censorship just how important it is to support the right of an elected politician to speak up.

If 38 Degrees themselves were about equality, they would have hosted both petitions equally. Instead, they behave like every other feminist organisation I have ever had contact with: censor, silence, misrepresent and still insist they are in favour of equality.

But they can not silence the campaign to champion fact-based politics and support politicians who speak up against feminist excesses.

  2. hi all
this is becoming a habit of 38 degrees.
I have in the past raised the issue of why they are promoting feminism over and above all else, and censorship of different opinion.

they will occasionally ask you to fill in a survey about your opinion of the site and its campaign.
i have even sent in an email of complaint , but of course no reply( and the letter mike shows above goes a long way to explain why). the same letter shows that there is a strong bias going on in their office and with that they are no longer the neutral or representative party they claim to be

i have on every occasion stated that 38 degrees must stay away from gender politics or must permit ALL. Especially as 38 degrees often complain about political interference with the opinion of people( brexit is a classic case)

thank you for showing this. The next time i will raise the issue of censorship by 38 degrees as impeding the democratic process that they claim to cherish.

would suggest as with change.org each time you sign a petition raise the censorship issue in the comments that you add with your signature
