Kate Smurthwaite, feminist ‘comedienne’, the Trades Description Act, a misleading poster in a JD Wetherspoon pub

Our thanks to Samantha for emailing us this earlier today:

Kate Smurthwaite describes herself as a ‘comedienne’. Given that even I think she’s less funny than a broken leg, could she be charged under the Trades Description Act?

It’s an intriguing question, and we’ll have one of our team of City lawyers look into the matter. The question has prompted me to publish this blog piece.

Today we were dropping off leaflets and engaging with people in Sutton in Ashfield, and yesterday we were in Kirkby in Ashfield. We’re big fans of JD Wetherspoon pubs at J4MB – it’s good to pay for a meal and good pint of real ale what we were in the 1990s – and both towns have excellent JDW pubs. Kirkby (as locals call it, and pronounced ‘Kirby’) has The Regent, while Sutton (pronounced ‘Sutton’) has The Picture House.

Thinking about the Trades Description Act put me in mind of misleading advertising, and specifically a large advertisement I photographed yesterday in The Regenthere. It led to some disappointment, I can tell you…

  1. She’s also inclined to play the ‘Misogyny Card’ when she’s losing the argument, as she did on the radio this lunchtime, threatening to leave the discussion (again). I’ll bet she’s a bundle of laughs at the Comedy Store – the audience must be cringing in the aisles.
