This double standard appears related to the sudden debate on women in combat roles. Just seen on Newsnight a report and interviews of two women officers . I agreed with both: A retired Brigadeer who argued that if women met the requirements they should not be excluded, she believed in fact that it would be a few comparatively exceptional individuals who wood choose to do this and meet the standards. And a current Major ,she was concerned that standards would be lowered to get more women in . Sadly the latter could have pointed to plenty of evidence that standards would be actually compromised. In theUK the Police Forces and Fire Services example reducing standards to meet gender “targets” , would the Armed Forces be able to resist this trend?
