Our congratulations to Tariqka Sheffey, who’s won this award for posting a ‘selfie’ on Instagram and bragging about staying in her car to avoid saluting the US flag:

The US Army clearly needs to recruit more women like Ms Sheffey. Their first challenge should be to drive the Russians out of the Crimean peninsula. No need to send in any male soldiers to support them. It could be a ‘real world’ test of the value – or otherwise – of female soldiers in the heat of battle.
Mike, there’s an interesting update on the U.S. Army’s assessment of women for front line duties at http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/02/26/army-study-giving-women-taste-combat-tasks/.
It contains this comment: “However, the survey also showed that only about 8 percent of Army women said they wanted combat jobs.” So 92% of Army women don’t want combat roles!

Thanks Sean. My guess is that the 8% would change their minds after one experience of actual frontline fighting. I recall a BBC documentary in which female ‘soldiers’ were being taken in armoured vehicles (putting the lives of other soldiers, almost all men, at risk) to talk to Afghan women in their compounds, about the evils of ‘the patriarchy’ (!). One was asked what she did the last time she was caught up in a firefight with the Taliban. She laughed and said, ‘I hit the deck and let the boys sort it out, as I always do!’ What’s the betting she’s on the same money as the men of the same rank?
