‘Men’s Hour’: Our correspondence with Jonathan Wall, Controller of BBC Radio 5 Live

Our efforts to gain some exposure on the feminist-friendly BBC Radio 5 Live programme Men’s Hour continues. Not a week goes by without me being asked why we’ve not yet had exposure on the programme, especially given I’ve been interviewed by the militant feminist broadcaster Jenni Murray on Woman’s Hour. As long ago as May 2012 we pointed to the fact that Jenni Murray had openly declared herself an admirer of the show in general, and of Tim Samuels, the show’s metrosexual presenter, in particular:

https://j4mbdotorgdotuk.wordpress.com/2013/09/14/mens-hour-an-endorsement-from-a-militant-feminist-jenni-murray/

Frustrated by the refusal of Tim Samuels to engage with us, about seven weeks ago I wrote to Jonathan Wall, the Controller of Radio 5 Live:

130727 letter to Jonathan Wall, Controller of BBC Radio 5 Live

His response was polite, but not encouraging:

130814 letter from Jonathan Wall

I was taken aback by the following points he made:

I don’t accept that Men’s Hour copies ‘feminist narratives found on Woman’s Hour’. It has covered a large range of issues and has no set agenda.

Exactly a month ago I wrote to him again, challenging him on those specific points, and making some wider points:

130824 second letter to Jonathan Wall, Controller of BBC Radio 5 Live

I haven’t yet heard back from Mr Wall, but when I do, I’ll post his response here.

‘Men’s Hour’ – an endorsement from a gender feminist, Jenni Murray

[This post was first published on http://fightingfeminism.wordpress.com on 18 May, 2012. It’s being reproduced here because the blog is no longer operational, but this particular post is relevant to the next post we’re going to publish, very shortly.]

Some of you will be aware of the BBC radio programme Men’s Hour. I recently emailed the presenter, a mid-30s former documentary maker, Tim Samuels, offering to appear on the show and talk about the scourge of feminism in the modern era. I haven’t heard back, and after reading an article by the veteran gender feminist broadcaster Jenni Murray in the new issue of Feminist Times – sorry, Radio Times – I don’t expect to hear back from him. The article is accompanied by a photograph of Ms Murray on a flight of steps, looking condescendingly down on Tim Samuels. In the article she refers to him as a ‘committed metrosexual’. Three paragraphs from near the end of the piece:

It’s apparent from our conversation that Men’s Hour, now in its third series, is gaining in confidence and sure-footedness. Some of the kookier ideas have gone. There is no hint of the much-vaunted idea of asking women to apologise for the more extreme aspects of feminism of the ‘all men are rapists’ variety.

[The next paragraph is a statement by Tim Samuels.]

“Modern blokes are shaped by feminism. We are better at communicating. We have no rage in our bellies against women. We intuitively champion equal rights and oppose discrimination. What I want to do next is delve into the darker recesses of men’s minds and ask, for example, if you’re committed to a relationship, what do you do if you don’t fancy your partner any more?”…

[Back to Jenni Murray.]

So, I wish all good luck to the most eligible bachelor in town. And to his programme. I’ve always said that when men start asking how they will juggle their jobs and their families we’ll have begun to draft the peace treaty that ends the sex war. Tim Samuels is on the right track.

‘Draft the peace treaty’? Declare an abject surrender to gender feminists, she means.

‘Tim Samuels is on the right track’? Men’s Hour is very clearly on the WRONG track. But what else would we expect from the ultra-Leftie BBC? A male feminist is presenting Men’s Hour and has the endorsement of a gender feminist writing in the unfailingly feminist Radio Times.

What dark days we live in.

A student donates £100 to J4MB

Earlier today we received a donation of £100 towards our £1,000 target to fund our fourth candidate for the 2015 general election. This was obviously pleasing, but the individual asked to remain anonymous. The gender of the donor wasn’t deducible from the his/her email address, so we emailed him/her to ask for his/her motivations behind the donation. We’ve just received this email in response:

I’m a male student, 19, at a university in the North of England, but I don’t want to identify myself beyond that. There’s a growing realisation among young men – and young women, come to that – that men and boys are demonised, and it’s time this demonisation STOPPED. We’ve all seen the carnage wrought by that demonisation – fathers crippled by divorce settlements, denied access to their children, male relatives committing suicide, and in my case, an uncle assaulted by a wife who was never charged for beating him black and blue with a hammer, although she knocked out several teeth in the process. But hey, she was drunk, so you shouldn’t blame her, seemed to be the consensus. Somehow I think he wouldn’t have been excused for beating her up, if he’d been drunk.

As a student I don’t have a lot of money, but I worked in the summer, so here’s £100 to help you fund another candidate.

Along with some other students I’m planning to establish a Men’s Rights group soon. The Students’ Union will go APESHIT. Good. I don’t suppose you’d be willing to travel here to give a speech to launch the group?

I’ve responded as follows:

Thank you both for your generous donation and your email. I should be delighted to give the speech you ask for, and to meet with you and other people who care about the human rights of men and boys (and the women who love them).

We have a target of £1,000 to fund our fourth candidate for the 2015 general election. Generous men and women have donated £305 so far, can you donate anything? Even £1 would be welcome. Thank you for your support:

Steve Brulé: ‘Suicide and the World Happiness Report’

In the UK, the male : female suicide ratio is unusually low by the standards of most countries. Only three British men commit suicide for every British woman who does, although British women ‘attempt’ suicide three times more often than British men. Experts in the field agree that this reflects women’s expectation that in a crisis they’ll be supported by friends, family, the state… Men soon realise that in a crisis, support is unlikely to be available. A small example of the different support made available to homeless men and women, as reported by a female social worker:

https://j4mbdotorgdotuk.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/gillian-dale-jefferies-we-salute-you/

The lack of state resources dedicated to understanding the causes of male suicide, and reducing the rate at which it occurs, is a scandal globally. So we were interested to read an insightful new piece on the subject by Steve Brulé http://blog.studiobrule.com for AVfM:

Brendan O’Neill: ‘The trial of Michael Le Vell – Salem comes to Britain’

Brendan O’Neill is the Editor of the online publication Spiked. His recent article is the most insightful piece I’ve read on the Michael Le Vell case:

http://www.spiked-online.com/newsite/article/the_trial_of_michael_le_vell_salem_comes_to_britain/14021#.UjMl2N5wavE

I’ve added a comment and, as always, invite you to do likewise. Spiked has of late been putting the print media to shame with its insightful coverage of gender political issues.

Honey Badger Radio: ‘Feminism’s Pimp Hand’

Another solid episode of Honey Badger Radio with the usual contributors – Della Burton, Karen Straughan (GirlWritesWhat), and Alison Tieman (Typhon Blue):

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/avoiceformen/2013/09/13/feminisms-pimp-hand

It’s lengthy (118 minutes) but well worth listening to in full, if you can spare the time. This is one programme I always listen to in full. Erin Pizzey joins the discussion (21:56 – 52:46) and makes a strong contribution. If you’re pushed for time, try to catch at least the Introduction by Della Burton (0:00 – 7:36).

Between 52:45 – 57:08 one of the ladies narrates the Introduction of the third edition (2008) of a book first published in 1971, Esther Vilar’s The Manipulated Man. It’s a book we recommend highly ourselves:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manipulated-Man-Esther-Vilar/dp/1905177178/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1379072535&sr=1-1&keywords=esther+vilar

The Honey Badgers’ introduction to the episode:

‘Are the Vaginas in the house?’ Eve Elsner screams to a cheering audience of feminists. Yep. All us women? We’re just vaginas. And that’s all that we are.

You know who else reduces women down to their genitals? Pimps. Specifically pimps reduce women down to what the pimp can extract in terms of benefit from their vaginas. Sorta like feminists. Except for feminists it’s not the vagina’s use that’s of interest, but it’s abuse. And whatever can be twisted into abuse of vaginas.

Make no mistake, like the pimp, all they care about is your vagina. If you didn’t have a vagina, they wouldn’t really care what happened to you. You’re a whore in their stable, pimped out for their benefit. And if you refuse to be feminism’s whore, watch out for their pimp hand! The instant you say no, you’ll see just how deep sisterhood goes.

Honey Badgers (the video)

As regular visitors will know, ‘Honey Badgers’ is a North American term for non-feminist and anti-feminist women, and it’s become a term applied to these estimable woman across the world. They include:

… and many more.

Two days ago I was explaining this to a young, beautiful, intelligent relative of the female persuasion, when she laughed and asked if I wanted to see a YouTube video of honey badgers. I said I would, and here it is. It’s been viewed by over 62 million people, more people than live in the UK and, although I haven’t yet checked the stats, I believe that might be more people than have ever watched a J4MB video. Enjoy:

I sent the link to a man who runs an influential MHR website, and he replied that this particular video was the original inspiration for terming non-feminist and anti-feminist women ‘Honey Badgers’.

Poor outcomes for NHS patients – our letter to Professor Sir Brian Jarman

There was an interesting and lengthy report yesterday on Channel 4 News about outcomes for patients treated by the NHS, which are markedly poorer than outcomes for patients in other developed countries. The issue has been raised by Sir Brian Jarman, an Emeritus Professor at Imperial College, London. His website http://www.brianjarman.com. After the programme I emailed him b.jarman@imperial.ac.uk with the following:

“Professor, good evening. I lead the political party Justice for men & boys (and the women who love them) and I was very interested to see the piece on Channel 4 News this evening on poor outcomes in the NHS.

We plan to contest 30 seats at the 2015 general election. I’ll personally be contesting Bedford & Kempston, and a few days ago a local paper, The Times & Citizen, printed a letter from me. It followed a recent report of the many failings of the local hospital:

The only surprise about the recent devastating report on the poor performance of Bedford Hospital is that anyone is surprised about it. People are surprised at every revelation of poor performance in the NHS. We shall inevitably be assured that lessons will be learned, only 10% achievement of targets will be acceptable in future, and so on. What will not be revealed, we can be sure, is ‘the elephant in the room’ – the relentless increase in the proportion of NHS doctors and consultants who are women.

Anna Soubry, a Conservative health minister, revealed in a debate a month or two ago that the increased proportion of female doctors in the NHS has had ‘unforeseen consequences’ for the service. She’s surely training for a future career as a stand-up comedienne. The writer and campaigner Dr Vernon Coleman was writing more than 30 years ago that the NHS’s policy of driving up the proportion of doctors who are women would have grave consequences in the long run, and time has proven him right (as it generally does).

Female doctors are far more likely than male doctors to quit the profession altogether, to work part-time rather than full-time, and to refuse to work unsocial hours or in the most stressful departments such as A&E. More than 70% of medical students today are women, and over 50% of GPs. The average GP today earns a cool £104,000 p.a.

Anna Soubry was forced to backtrack on her comments about ‘unforeseen consequences’, and later stated the NHS plans to train more doctors to ‘solve’ the crisis. It costs £250,000 to train a doctor, and we can be sure 70% of the new ones will again be women, although the costs will mainly be borne by men. British men collectively pay 72% of the income tax collected in the UK, £64 billion more than British women every year.

The feminisation of the NHS has proved to be a complete disaster for patients and taxpayers.

When, one wonders, will ‘the elephant in the room’ be recognised?”

Denise Ryan, shame on you. Renee Fillipone, shame on you.

An interesting piece by John the Other for AVfM, concerning an alleged ‘frosh rape chant’ at the University of British Columbia. The term ‘frosh’ is used in North America in the same way we’d use ‘Fresher’ in the UK, and ‘frosh week’ is the week at the start of the academic year in which new students acclimatise themselves to their new environment.

Paddy Power Poker promotes ‘wife removal service’ in their new TV advert

Our warm thanks to Chris Scott for alerting us to this.

The gambling outlet Paddy Power has just financed an advert titled, ‘Paddy Power Poker helps men get rid of their wives in new TV advert’. Except, of course, it hasn’t. We need to do the customary gender switch to arrive at the truth, ‘Paddy Power Bingo helps women get rid of their husbands in new TV advert.’ Chris tells us:

I’ve just made a formal complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority (‘ASA’) about the new Paddy Power Bingo advert. It shows a supposedly funny ‘husband removal service’ which involves the husband being tied up, yanked violently out of the house via the window, and hurled into the back of a van. As I said in my complaint, what would be the reaction to a ‘wife removal service’ with a female subject to a violent abduction?

You can see the ad at:

http://www.thedrum.com/news/2013/09/02/paddy-power-bingo-helps-women-get-rid-their-husbands-new-cpb-ad

Chris makes a good point, which is why we’ve just sent our own complaint to the ASA, on the grounds that the advert is sexist and offensive to men in general, and to husbands in particular. Given the ease with which British women have ejected husbands from their homes for 30+ years, then relied on the state to extract money from their ex-husbands whilst simultaneously denying them access to their children, the sexist nature of this advertisement is deplorable. We invite you to join us in making a formal complaint to the ASA.

A six-page leaflet from the ASA on making a complaint:

http://www.asa.org.uk/Consumers/~/media/Files/ASA/Misc/ASA_consumer_complaints_single_final.ashx

The link to the start of the process for making an online complaint to the ASA (the whole process doesn’t take long):

http://www.asa.org.uk/Consumers/How-to-complain/Online-Form/Step1.aspx

Now if you want to go the whole hog, I invite you to add a comment to the Paddy Power Bingo Facebook page, as I just have:
