This is a worrying development. A man is cleared of rape in the criminal court, yet is sued in the civil court for £80,000 because the burden of proof is lower. This is just more encouragement for false allegations as based on ‘balance of probability’ a man can be taken for £80,000. Given that even men convicted in a criminal court are often innocent (Ched Evans etc), this could now open the floodgates for women to abuse the legal system further by making false allegations.
